FYI Recent Windows XP causes update loop
I recall seeing a few people posting some issues lately that I thought might be related but I'm not sure. Any I wanted to post this in case anyone has the issue.
A recent .NET Framework patch is causing problems with Windows XP resulting in an infinite update loop.
Three security updates for .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.5 are the cause of the problem. Patches KB2518664, KB2572073 and KB2633880 all are automatically downloaded and installed in Windows XP's automatic update feature.
On affected systems, the installation of these patches proceeds without error but after a short time, the update service says it would like to install them again and will keep reinstalling the patches if allowed. Microsoft's general advice in this situation is to reset Windows Update components, though it has yet to offer any specific advice.
Here is the info for the fix.
Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update

I never use updates. I just use Avira and Comodo firewall. Never patched once and I'm fine.

That is a very flawed logic, just because you haven't gotten anything doesn't mean you are fine. You just haven't stumble upon something that has exploited one of the holes you haven't patched.

Well, I do use Noscript and NortonDNS so that helps. The thing is I never even used these things before just 8 years ago. Never got a virus before. From all the threads I've read on people updating they seem to have even more problems. Winblows has so many holes but if you know what to use to prevent those exploits then your good to go. I also have DD-WRT installed in the router and I block ActiveX unless I need to use it for some reason.

More or less I'm just saying its a bad bit of advice for the avg novice user to read your post and then think they shouldn't update Windows. You should always run the latest security updates for all your software. Obviously there is a possibility of problems but the risks are usually minimal especially when compared to what could happen if you get hit with an infection.
We can't compare what we see on forums to what the real world is. We only see users and read threads when they have an issue so of course you are going to see a slanted view. I've ran updates on all my machines forever and rarely have issues. Most users in fact don't. But it does happen.
