    Photo shop 5, on Win7

Dose anybody know if Photo shop 5 will run on Win7 64.

Yes Photo shop 5, that came out, for Windows 95.

It still works flawlessly on XP home 32.

This could be an expensive upgrade for the wife, if it doesn't.

    Thanks in advance.

just wondering, if it doesn't, does she need the full PS? Or can she get by with the more mundane and basic Elements version?

Just thinking of a way that might not be so expensive if it doesn't work out.

Myself, I started using version 6, back on XP, most recent version I have is 8.

I know that works on Win7 64, so its a good bet that 5 might?

I've used some other Image editing programs from back in that era on Win7 64 as well, so I know that doesn't confirm one way or the other, but its worth a try.

First I would have to convince my wife that hates change to change.

I have the latest Gimp, on my Linux laptop, but she won't even look at it.

I don't know what the capabilities are, of either.
Like can the newest Gimp, do what PS5 dose?

Also I'm not even sure which new photo shop is the equivalent of 5.
    I assume it is CS6 for $650.
Is it possible elements, is as good as 5?

The only thing I really know about it, is it's crazy expensive.

If it doesn't work you could install the trial version of VMware workstation and create a Windows 98 environment and install PS to it. Then uninstall the trial of VMware workstation and install the free VMware player to run the Windows 98 OS with PS. It's what I would do instead of upgrading. Or you can be a pirate. Arrr!

That is a thought, but there is no way, when she wants to edit a photo, she will use a VM, or anything she can't just open and use.

I've never felt at ease with pirating.

Then I have never felt a need for VM, and I am too lazy to learn about it, until a real need arises.

I'll keep it in mind though, it certainly should work.

All that is required to run a VM is point and click.

I still have to learn it.
All I know is what it is.

I'm sure I can figure it out.

I just don't have the desire to experiment with computers that I use to.
Waite till you get old, and you will know what I mean.

That being said, I have been thinking about giving it a try, but the spirit hasn't moved me yet.

Maybe after my last big project of the fall, installing a new pellet stove, I'll have some free time.

Last week was tearing down a chimney, and installing a skylight.

Lets put it this way, the latest version of Elements should easily be as good as 5 was.

Latest Version of GIMP should be as capable as well, if not more so.

Though it is a different program, and though I have been using it for years, I have found it less noob/user friendly than PS.

But it should be as capable.

as to latest version of PS comparable, any current one is well beyond what 5 was capable of.

Well, when I was diagnosed with schizophrenia back in 2010 I started to turn away from computers and PC games. I loved my 5.1 surround sound connected to my computer, but I just couldn't sit in my dungeon of a room and play any games or do anything PC related. The anxiety I suffer takes it's toll too. I'm getting a bit better, I still have to set up a new computer for my parents which requires me to format, find drivers, move data from one computer to the new one and tweak the machine. It's a project I just don't want to take on right now, but hopefully I will. Everyday is a new day.

I know they ended support for PS5 awhile ago, but if it works in XP 32bit, there is a good chance with the right windows you can run it in 'compatibility mode'. I believe that is only available in Ultimate and Premium versions of Win 7.

If you can talk your wife into trying/using a newer version of PS, shoot me a PM.

    Thanks guys.
I'll read up on that stuff Shyguy, I suspected 5 might be pretty outdated, as to capability.
If the $100 version is at least as good, that's all she needs., and will be happy with it.
If Gimp is harder to learn, there is no way, I'll get her to use it. She has too many years with PS.

Taxman, you're shaming me into trying VM, even if I don't use it on the wifes machine.
I have several spares to experiment with.
I still have times that I dive in and experiment with computers, just not as often as I used to.
Once I can get myself started, I usually enjoy it still.

I do more with them in the winter, and I never refuse anybody that needs one fixed.

Thanks again, and now I'll do the homework you 2 have given me.

I was wondering about Compatibility mode. I was planning on 7 Home.

I'm pretty sure a newer version of PS is not a problem, as a lot of the interface should be familiar.
I already warned her 5 might not work, and she was fine with a new version.

I'm still about a month off for her new build, so I'm a little ahead of myself.

You will probably hear from me, as I would like to get a newer version.
Hopefully this pellet stove will be the last big expense, for this year, and I'll be building 2 computers.

I can vouch that photoshop 7 works fine on Windows 7 pro 64.. no clue on 5 unfortunately though. As other's have said if it runs in XP, good chance it'll be fine on 7. But as also pointed out, even the 'low end' Adobe graphics programs these days should be equivalent to what ps5 did... and will do it far more efficiently as well.

    Thanks Solo

That puts my biggest fear to rest, paying $650 for a program.
That's about all her computer will cost.

To tell the truth, I was shocked when 5 worked on XP.
