    Problem with Winrar

    Hi every one,
I need help for the problem I faced with Winrar. I have a AVI file with 173MB. Since I was unable to send it via email, even with SkyDrive online files and documents, I decided to reduce the file size. I though Winrar could possibly be a good option. I right clicked on the AVI file and then clicked on “add to my archive”. A window appeared “Archive Name and Parameters”. I then selected fast as “compression method” and for another menu, “split to volumes, bytes” I entered 24mb. Then I pressed ok and then I saw hundreds of hundreds of Winrar files on my desktop, all 1000bytes. I have been trying to delete them with no success. I’m so much disappointed and would be very grateful if anybody could kindly give me some advice.
    Many thanks,

What happens when you try to delete them? If each file is 1k, then you probably have about 173,000 files. My guess is that it may not look like you're deleting them, but you probably are. There are just too many files there to see the progress you're making.

I'm afraid there is no other method, but to highlight as many as you can and delete them. If you hold the control key and select the files you can select more than one. just don't release the control key when you click a new file.

You might try moving the other items from your desktop into another location (temporarily), then go to the command prompt, go to that directory, and type DEL *.*

I just wish there was an option in windows by which you could choose the file name and file type and delete all the selected files altogether.

Howste I can't find the command prompt. could you please let me know where I can find it.

I found command prompt bu tI can see
    c:/documents and setting>my computer name
What commant i should give it to clean up only my desktop. I have already put my necessary desktop files into a temprary file.
    will appreciate your advice

I could sort the problem out with the command prompt and directory and del*.*.
Many thanks Howste. This solution would never ever come to my mind. Thanks

so now, does any body know how to reduce a 174MB AVI file to 20MB?

Any idea on how to reduce the size of an AVI video file of 174 MB to maximum 20MB so it could be sent via email. Thanks

I seriously doubt that'll happen! What service are you using that has such a small limit? There are other options out there like dropbox which will allow you to upload the file and then share it with whomever so they can download it. Or if you have an IM service like Yahoo Messenger you can generally connect directly to the user and send it over to them.

I’m going to send this file to a group of my students whom carry different email accounts (e.g. gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc), but mine is hotmail with presumably 25 MB limit. I also tried “Save File on SkyDrive” in hotmail but it does not work. Any idea?

I'm not familiar with that option but if the file is already on your computer log into your skydrive account and upload it to skydrive and then share it.

You could catch and delete them all by using the search option ... Type in the search : *.*rar ...

Be very careful with that, as it could expose every rar file on your PC to be presented for deletion. You will still need to take care in your selection.
