How can i tell how much diskspace i have free on a specific volume on my hard drive? How much should i plan on keeping free for a swap file? |

To see how much free space you have left you can use.... df -kh
I would say 256 meg fro swap is usually OK unless you use gentoo which requires nearer a gig.

If you in linux open up a command line and type:
df
This will display all partitions, number of blocks, used space, avaliable space, % used and where it is mounted
As for swap, a general rule of thumb I follow is 2 X RAM.
Now this gets modified as I get more or less RAM.
256 RAM, 512 Swap
512 RAM, 512 swap
64 Ram, 256 Swap
128 Ram 256 Swap
Just how I do it I like how it works.
Always, gotta type faster than me......

Thank you all,that worked.
I did notice that there is a partition mounted that is windows. I browsed through some of the files and it looks just like a windows partition. Now i do not think that i need this. I loaded Mandrake 8.2 and upgraded to KDE 3.0.2 so that i could learn something new. do i need this windows partition? Can i delete it? Thanks again for all of your help. I am really enjoying my new found OS. |

Well, i cant remember if i had windows on the disk or not. But, i dont want it on there so i should just be able to delet the partition then? Then setup a new one in the space available? Or should i just delete everything on that partition and assighn a drive letter to it? Hmmm....what to do. |
