    Need a Win9x memory monitor

Can anyone recommend a utility for monitoring memory in a Win9x environment? My fawther-in-law's computer has 256 MB's RAM and at idle has only 2% available according to RAMBooster. I need to know what's eating it all so we can disable some of the garbage. I know he has Lotus123 running as well as someother suites but not exactly sure. Any help appreciated.

Doesn't the task manager show what proccesses are running and the percentage of memory its taking???

Been a while since used 98 so can't remember for sure if the task manager shows that. I know it does on 2k

    I wasn't aware Win9x had TaskManagers.

hmmmm, like I said its been a while since I used 9x OS's but doesn't it show processes running when you do a contol, alt, delete? And aslso show how much mem and cpu processes are being used.

I guess not, I just spoke to someone, guess in 9x you can only kill processes.

I used to use maxmem years ago, i allowed you to control the usage and clean out mem to free up mem. Don't think you want that cuz you want to find what is hogging up resources.

    Heres is maxmems site anyways.
    MaxMem

    Description of MaxMem
Description: Ensure that you always have as much physical memory available as possible with this memory-management utility. Set minimum amounts of memory to be made available under certain circumstances, and this program will passively monitor how system resources are being used. It runs in the system tray and shows exactly how much memory is available, as well as graphs that illustrate how you've been using memory over the last 60 seconds
I'll keep looking and see what else i can find.

First Run Msconfig.exe in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder... I'm guessing that windows is on his C: drive. Go to the startup tab on top and Take a look at what's all running at startup and kill all the unnecessary "junk" that doesn't need to run by unchecking it...Your system will need to reboot afterwards...Then switch your memory manager to : MAXMEM from Analog X(It's a lot better) instead of Ram Booster... here's the link to the download:

    Have a good one!

Hmmmm found something else that might work.

    Called MPower

edit: this one states you can actually see what is hoging up your resources and help free them up.

Max mem is good too but won't show what cpu usage is either.

That's funny cause all you NEED to know is what Apps are running at startup...You can tell what other Apps are running after startup by writing down on a piece of paper what Apps you opened...geez

If you want to monitor you CPU go to www.tucows.com , go into their windows section, and do a search on: cpu. You'll find a bunch of apps there that will help you on that...

might not be a start up application that eatting up his memory, could be an application that is memory intensive and he won't see which ones they are unless its running and he can see which one is hogging up resources.

So before going in and disabling startup items, it does help to know which ones are causing the problems.

Many grapic desgin programs are not in the start up menu but are mem hogs.

Yes you are right they would show up in Msconfig, however it will not show the mem or cpu usage as like i does in 2k and XP. Dunno about ME, never used ME.

Hi try Wintop from MS, it can help.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d.../w95kerneltoy/ (55 Kb).
    Direct download : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow...95KRNLTOYS.EXE
Do no pay attention to the warning about Win98, Wintop is safe to use in any version of Windows.
Just install it via the wintop.inf file and see what program or process keeps your system busy.
It shows CPU usage of all programs running, even those which are not visible when you do CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Personally, I like RAM Booster which I always used under Windows 9x for monitoring and recovery purpose. I still use it under Windows 2000 and XP just for monitoring. The screen is quite convenient to read ina glance.
