| Is it possible to buy just the win2k cd without a license?
I got a window2000 license with my laptop but the laptop was used and no win2k cd was inlcuded. Is it possible to buy just the CD from microsoft ?
I know it's perfectly legal for me to use a "copy" of win2k
as i pay for the license and not the CD itself.
But now that i have the license it would feel good to have a real CD too.
Is it possible ? |

I've never heard of being able to buy just a cd from MS. Any one correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it would be illegal for you to make a copy of someone elses CD as long as it's exactly the same ver and such. As you said it's the liscense your buying, and this would be for backup.
Still though something about what I just said sounds wrong. It's kinda late and I'm not working at 100% right now. So before you do anything get another POV on this. |

No ones gonna know if your win2k is from a backed up CD unless they look at the CD. thats the nice thing about PRE-XP software, you can make back ups and not have to wory about all the new fangled activation crap and what not.
your best bet would be a used software store or ebay probably. |

Check the EULA for win2k
On W98, MS allows you to install the o/s on your "portable" computer in addition to the desktop.
This is NOT the case with XP

Dunno bout 2k | Yes i know this
Problem is HAVE the license what dont have is the windows 2000 pro cd.
Since you pay for the license and not the CD is it possible to get a new CD ?
i've been told that i can use a downloaded copy of win2k but i want the real CD.
The EULA says nothing about what happends if you loose the CD ? it doesn't mention if you get a new one or not.
But since you pay for the license to use the software and not the software itself it would be logical to assume that i could get a new cd if i loose it since i'm only "borrowing" the software. |

but since i've paid for it i want the real CD and not a fake one. |

I dont think so, I just spent .5 an hour trying to find any reference to a replacement cd-rom for Windows 2000 on MS's site and couldnt find anything.
I think your best bet would be to ask some of your friends if they will let you borrow their cd. When you have it you might want to make a copy on your hard disk(your allowed a backup I think) or burn a copy on your/your friends main computer.
Good luck.

I'm not sure with retail but, I think there is a chance of it. I have bought both XP and W2K media (aka CD) for ~$20 each. In both cases it was the coporated edition though. I think you should call a well known reseller if you really want to buy the media.
In every MS EULA I've read it has always stated you can make a backup copy of the media. So in your case, I would just burn a copy of the W2K CD and simply label it W2K backup. That should be perfectly legal as I understand it. |
