What's with the the standby mode?
Here's initial configuration:
Laptop Toshiba SP6100
W2K SP2 FI
Part of a W2K/Novell domain
I installed SP3 FI on the laptop, and as usual close the lid when I'm ready to go home from work. But the computer now refuses to enter standby. Previously when I closed the lid the laptop entered standby mode fine (it is so configured from the toshiba power saver). It doesn't stay poweron either, it enters some odd state where I have the desktop color and mouse cursor (which I can move, but I can't do anything else but force power off).
BUT,
If I remove the RJ45 connector from the back of the laptop before I close the lid, it will enter standby correctly.
As I thought this was a problem with SP3 I uninstalled it, but the problem remains. It won't enter standby mode if the network cable is connected.
What could be the cause of this?

perhaps your PC's network card has got this Wake Up function
maybe should take a look at the network card properties!

The Wake on LAN function might also be found in the bios settings. |

I doubt sp3 modified my bios.
However, I set so that power saving isn't allowed to shut down my network adapter and initial testing succeeded. It did enter standby correctly.
I once had a desktop computer which wanted to start itself up every ten seconds. I would shut it down, and it would restart after 10secs. It did that even though it didn't have any network cable attached and I had to pull the power cord out to sto it from doing it. Stupid network, stupid computers

No, didn't solve anything.
The problem seems to happen if I have any program open. If I close the lid with nothing open standby will occur. But if I open, eg. explorer it will not enter standby.

Another update
I closed the lid yesterday evening in order to have my laptop ready for work. Didn't have any program open, nor a network cable attached. But it did it again, no standby mode. Just the damn blue screen with moving mouse cursor and nothing to do.
