You may want to check out e-smith's SME Server. It's Linux based and free. It does just about everything MS's Small Business Server does. One caveat, though. It needs to be the only OS on the box. It will reformat your drives and install itself. But it works great and is easy to set up and run.

What do you want it to do?
There are some things that linux is great at and very easy to setup... other things ain't so easy lol
Either way, regardless if you want to learn... linux is the way to go... windows is all point and click and it maybe setup but you have no idea how it works

hello,
the term server is a bit generic...
web server - linux
printer sever - linux
mail server - linux
sql server - linux
ftp server - linux
server with security (e.g. https) - linux
extra hard drive space server - linux
well, to be honest i can't think of anywhere i would have mswindows be a server... maybe an application server where apps are launched remotely to ms win clients, but i think samba can do this just as well and probably better.

Windows IS preferred for one thing...
A honeypot server lol Quote: Honeypot
An Internet-attached server that acts as a decoy, luring in potential hackers in order to study their activities and monitor how they are able to break into a system. Honeypots are designed to mimic systems that an intruder would like to break into but limit the intruder from having access to an entire network. If a honeypot is successful, the intruder will have no idea that s/he is being tricked and monitored. Most honeypots are installed inside firewalls so that they can better be controlled, though it is possible to install them outside of firewalls. A firewall in a honeypot works in the opposite way that a normal firewall works: instead of restricting what comes into a system from the Internet, the honeypot firewall allows all traffic to come in from the Internet and restricts what the system sends back out.
| Lets in all the traffic and great for being attacked |

hehe this is great so a buncha linux freaks out there huh? Basically i want a secure file and printer sharing server that can also be used as a workstation and a very fast internet connection or tweaking ability if that made since.... I'm relatively new at servers and want to mess around on a different OS im tired of M$ and want to get out before "they use a secret webcam, located in my new hardware, i had to get to use their new OS, to see me in my boxers and sell it on the internet for mo money but for my benifit..." er something.... a lil like that anyway.
I dont want just opinions i want why you have that opinion... why is linux/sme server better? sme cant duel boot? might not be able to do that one then less i have more details about it

Linux is better because every single thing is configurable at some level, even if it isn't in the config files, it is possible to add to the source if you understand it well enough. It is also much more secure as most people who find a hole will fix it right off the bat rather than M$ having it reported to them and taking months over it.
Another obvious advantage is that Linux and BSD are free. You can tweak to no end and once you have it set up (admittedly not difficult once you learn you're way around) you can do almost anything with it. If you want a simple file/print server, then just use samba, or if it is only *nix boxes connecting, NFS. CUPS will run a bleeding good print server and You can run whatever UI you want on your WS.
That's my pov anyway.

I also would run linux for this task.
One thing to check is to make sure your printer is linux compatible!
Printers, depending on what the company feels like releasing, range from fully supported to better off as a paper weight. www.linuxprinting.org
