how do I recover a chkdsk'd file after a crash?

My machine froze on me while playing a game and an application was running in the background. After having to hit the RESET button on my tower, it booted back up and a file (called queue.xml) from that application is gone completely. It was basically a list of things in a queue for download thru this app.

I know XP did a chkdsk-type check on C: while loading back up, but I wasn't watching it. How do I recover that queue.xml file ?

IF scandisk/chkdsk was set to save recovered files, then you just need to find the file and rename it. Although it might be partially damaged. If it was just a text file then most of it could possibly still be recoverable.

Look for any files on your system with a name of file0001.chk, file0002.chk, file0003.chk, etc.

IOW, search for file*.chk or file????.chk

If you find multiples, then open them with a text viewer to see if you can find the one you're looking for.

Only 2 non-related .chk files on my whole drive.

I know the other versions of Windows created these .chk files, but are you sure XP does the same? Just trying to turn over some stones... thx.
