Hard Drive Suiside In RedHat
I had 1 machine running redhat 7.3 and the hard drive randomly spun down and spun up repeatidly. i decided that there must be a problem with the drive itself but I started using a totally different computer. Every single piece of hardware was different except for the video card. This new computer was also running redhat 7.3 and ocasionally the hard drive will spin down and spin up again while the comp is being used. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?

The only hdd problem I got with RH 7.3 was this:
hda: dma_init:error=0x84
{drivestatuserror badcrc}
Tried two brand new WD 200BB hdd and got identical error.Dma wasnt enabled either.I had these drives in a removable tray so I tried installing drive inside the case and it still did it.Used the same drives with MDK 8.2 and 9 and also SuSE 8.1 and they work error free
Go figure

Tried the last one out of the tray.It would be worth a try.I figured the curcuit board in the drive rack may have caused the error.I use some pretty cheap ones
I never thought of it when I had the first one in the tray-it only occured to me after I used it in another box and found no errors with it.When I put the second one in the case it didnt show any errors so I thought I solved the problem but after a couple restarts it showed up again.Put it back in the tray and ran the DataSafeguard utilities on it and it passed all the tests.So I figured it must be a RH/WD thing maybe.

I took it out of the removable bay and just installed it inside the case. If that fixes the problem then i will be happy. I will also be mad since that means that i have cheap removable bays

This did not fix the problem....the hard drive still spins down and spins right back up again. I am connected to a UPS so unless the USP is messed up power flow should be fine.

May I ask what kind of hard drive it is?
I saw one hard drive fail that did the exact same thing... hardware problem pure and simple.

Its a western digital. I had another western digital that was doing this and figured that the drive was jsut bad. This is a separate drive in a separate computer. When this drive was in a different computer it did not do this. It is still under waranty so should i just let it kill itself or should I just wait and RMA it before the warantee runs out?
