Why do people abuse me when I tell them that my operating sysytem is Windows 98SE, what's wrong with it? I've been called a Luddite for not having XP.
My 98SE never crashes and handles everything nicely, so why should I upgrade, gimme some valid reasons?
cheers

98SE is an OK OS. Better than 98ME. Win2k is faster and handles memory better though. I'm not a big XP fan yet. Too much fluff. Maybe after SP2. |

w00dy I have to agree with U. I have a win98se that I play games on and this PC (win2k). & 2 PC's with linux RH (6.0 & 7.3) I am trying to learn control with. This win2k will not read floppys that it did not make and latey word will not start. I keep having to revert back to the win98se to do anything. Brunix |

The problems I came across with Win9x..
1. Memory Management
2. BSOD
3. System File Corruption
4. Poor multi-tasking performance

I have 98SE on a couple of boxes without any running problems at all......
I also have ME(Mega Errors) on 2 others

Frankly, this Luddite is mostly happy with 98SE. I have machines around here that have run for months on end without a restart, other than the very occasional tweak, software install, that sort of thing, and certainly no BSOD's or anything. I wouldn't mind putting 2K Pro on one or two machines just to handle the memory issues better on these couple of boxes that really need that sorta thing.
But, the expense, headaches, heartaches, and hassles of deploying XP Pro across 10 machines (including some older boat anchors ) and then doing something as simple as setting up a simple peer-to-peer file and printer sharing network, dealing with incompatible hard disk file systems and all the rest... Nah, I just ain't gonna do it until I'm forced to.
At my office the P4 1.8 GHz machines with XP on them are no faster than my Celeron 800 with 98SE on it, and actually harder (for me) to get around on.
Admittedly, I've seen a few things in XP that would be nice to be able to do, but nothing compelling. Too much bloat, too much Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer telling me what the he** I can and can't do, and the install and restore nightmares I've heard around here have me looking real hard at Linux.
And it looks butt-ugly, too.

Let me ask you guys something:
Using 98, do you keep up with all the updates? Is that why it
seems fairly stable to you guys?
Actually, I'm running ME on this machine, with relatively few probs. Seems like when I try some game demos, it'll do something squirrel-ly ; and memory mgmt is rather poor.
Running XP Pro on the other, just because I got the OEM cheap,
and since I build systems for folks, thought I should become familiar with it. I like not having to worry about the low resources thing ; I like the built-in driver support, but I hate the whole "Big Brother" approach that MS has taken. But hey, poor Bill G has to protect his billion$. . .
Also, how would you guys compare XP to 2000 Pro?
- Bill

As far as XP is conserned I already have a Big Brother and he is in Georga.
Win98 memory. After a thread from here I have managed my virtual memory with no problems (now that I opened my mouth lets see). 512 M PC133 with virtual mem set to 300m min & max.
Linus is the future. The RH 7.3 will install itself. Does everything but turn the PC on. and it might do that Brunix |

I do/did like 98SE. I had no problems with it that I did not create myself. I have upgraded to XP Pro myself on 3 machines. I just saw that upgrade and get used to XP. 95 faded and not many people are using it anymore. If you plan to use 98SE, you need to get a hold of the upgrades and service packs on disk now. |

Heard of the expression `If it ain't broke, why fix it?' Well if you're satisfied with 98SE and it's giving you not that much of a problem, why switch to another OS?
As for problems with Win9X OS, always bear in mind that all OSes were not created perfect Heck if Windows 95 was perfect why would Microsoft come up with 98? If XP was perfect, why create service packs? If Windows was perfect why build Linux? What matters is that your system works and you're happy with it
BTW, what's a Luddite
