| does norton ghost do this?
I haven't actually used norton ghost and nor do I quit understand the purpose of norton ghost. But I am in search of a reliable program that allows me to reinstall my OS (WinXP Pro) with all the the essential programs installed and settings without having to format all my drives.
I guess I'm looking for a program that kind of makes an image of my harddrive and instead of reinstalling every application (including OS) and settings, the image would just install itself to the state i want it.
It might sound confusing but i'm pretty sure it's possible some how.
thx in advance. |

That's exactly what Norton Ghost does best.

You can use Ghost to take an image of a partition, then if that partition goes bad, you only have to format it and load the image on it.
It will be the *exact* same image you took.
So if you imaged windows with apps and tweaks, they will all be there after loading the image.
It is pretty easy and very useful program for backup.

You have to tell it where to save the image. |

actually you don't even have to format it...the ghost utility takes care of everything.

the ghost image is just basically a file. you can copy it to another drive, machine, cd, etc. |

Yes, you have to tell it where to save the image.
It could be on another partition, it could go into a CD-RW directly.
Also, Ghost can slice the image for you, if you asked before taking the image... so you can burn the sliced image into a couple of CDs to save HD space. |

BTW, the HOME versions normally do not allow you to save or image directly from a network source. But having a 2nd partition solves that problem. |

You can reimage any harddrive with the same image right so if we were to go out and buy a new computer for every one in the house we could image the same thing on them all even if they have diferant stats? (we could change drives easy enough)
