Too much WinXP tweaking...
I just tried to upgrade from Norton SystemWorks 2002 Pro to SystemWorks 2003 Pro (I really, really wanted 2003's Performance Test, which turned out to be a big disappointment).
I uninstalled 2002, then installed 2003 but it errored when installing LiveUpdate and CleanSweep and those two apps didn't install. I uninstalled 2003, re-installed twice... same errors.
I've left it as-is for now but while looking for clues I found a text file in the C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate folder. It says:
"Install Failed
14
The LiveUpdate install failed because you do not have Long Pathname enabled. Please enable Long Pathnames and re-install LiveUpdate."
Hmm... now this rings a bell - I remember implementing a tweak to turn off DOS file name creation, figuring I'll never or very rarely need to access my system from a DOS boot floppy since there will be no more BIOS updates for my old SS7 MVP3 board.
Well, silly me - I can't remember where or how I enabled this "tweak" and can't find the webpage I read about it in the first place.
Anyone know about this tweak and how to reverse it? I'm not sure this is the problem with the SystemWorks install but seems a likely suspect.

Yep, disabling NTFS 8.3 file name creation was the culprit. Installed SystemWorks 2003 again without a hitch this time. Thanks muno
