Hi there,
I *was* using opera 6.05 in win2kpro until it started crashing as soon as i launch it. I've been a regular opera user for more than a year now, haven't had this problem.
As soon as i launch it, it crashes after about 10 secs or so. "Your program has done something illegal and we have to close it", or some such error message.
I uninstalled and reinstalled opera without any luck.
Any ideas anyone??
thanks,

| a few ideas
Any plugins?
What software or hardware was added to the PC just before the crashing began?
What settings changed?
Defective RAM?
Loose card?
Redownload Opera, just in case what you are installing is defective?

No plugins..
no hardware added.
my IE6 was acting like IE5, so i uninstalled and reinstalled IE6. that's the only software change i can remember
no settings changed, unless one considers changing wallpaper.
as regards to defective RAM or loose card, i dunno, everything else is working fine....ie6, winamp3, photoshop...etc.
i was using this version for more than 3 months ... had no problems ... will redownload tho'
also to add, i do virus checks with updated definitions pretty regularly...norton corporate 7.5...didn't find anything
regards

Hmm. I'm also using 6.05, quite stable as you had mentioned.
I remember that when I was playing with IE versions (5.0 upped to 5.5 upped to 6.0 dropped back to 5.0) I had also been toying with Opera (6.01-6.03) at the same time. I remember that Opera started crashing along the way, but I'm back to stable right now. Let see... IE 5.0 was reinstalled and then Opera got upped from 6.03 to 6.05, and here I am today.
I also had to reset Default browser to Opera.
1] are you starting up with a defective web page? When I start Opera, it pops up a window to start where I left off.... If you can change that setting to 'start with no windows', you could then try a different site.
2] Can you somehow get Opera to launch and not crash at all? Maybe delete all of the stuff in /Opera/Cache4 folder? If so, hit F12, disable some things and immediately quit so that next time you start Opera, it will sue the disabled settings. |

tried all them startup options of opera, i.e. saved window setup, homepage, or no windows.
when i start up with no windows, it loads up fine, but as soon as i try to browse any webpage, it crashes.
emptied the cache4 folder as well
no luck so far!!! |

If it was working fine before the IE thing, maybe IE replaced a DLL that Opera requires (but doesn't install) with it's own version or a defective one. |

had this problem recently with Opera 7 beta 1.2 i disabled Java and it worked out fine. For some reason Java 1.4.1 just made a mess of it. Try disableing some of the other plugins if that doesnt work.

I just ran into the same problem on a customers computer!
The only thing that was done to the computer between the installation/test of Opera was to set up "Home" networking using the Network Wizard built in to XP.
O-o-o-o-o, network settings change???
