Question
corrupted .SYS files - WinME

I need some expert advice on what I should do with the following files:

C:\IO.SYS
C:\Windows\Command\EBD\IO.SYS
C:\Windows\Command\EBD\Winboot.sys

I have just finished a complete virus scan using AVG and it indicated that the above files are dammaged.

My question is the following - can I copy these files from another PC with WinME and not cause major problems?

I have another PC on my network that I can copy the files from (all files checked out ok on that one) it and replace the bad ones on the target PC.

This is the place that I figure to get the best advice, so lets have it.

The files in "\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD" are for creating an "Emergency Boot Disk".

You could safely copy all the files from another machine, as long as they're from ME.

You could also find them on the ME disk. Just look in the directory where all the .CAB files are. You will see a file called "EBD.CAB". I'm not sure if ME supports opening them, it should, if you can, just extract the ones from there to the respective locations. If not, use WinZip to get the job done.

The IO.SYS can be copied from the same place as well.

Hey Evil Rick,

Took your suggestion and copied/replaced the bad files with the one that where known to be good.

I hope that clears up some of the problems that were happening on that PC.

Now if I can only convince my son to leave the AV software up and running on the PC so that this won't happen again.

Thanks again for the help

Does Windows ME have SFC? (System File Checker) I don't have ME installed on this machine any more. If it's there, you can just go Start => Run and type SFC. It will check for corrupted system files and restore them from the installation disk.

howste - I think you are right about SFC in WinME. I have copied the files and will double check it with SFC just to make sure that the rest is ok.

Thanks for the advice
