| My 2K box has slowed a bit
Hi, I have a box with 2K installed with SP3 and it has slowed down these past couple of weeks. I have GTA 3 and it has started to be a bit jerky even with draw distance set to min and on 640*480*16. It was fine when I installed the game. My ISDN net takes around 10 seconds to connect when before it was 2 at most. I have defragged and cleared lots of crap but this install is only 2 months old.
I get the odd error where it says that the application has closed because of an error etc.
I have installed my Nvidia drivers again to see if it was that but its not.
Thanks Doot.
System
A7V-133-c
1800+
512Mb Sdram
60Gb Maxtor 5400
SB4.1
Geforce 2 Ti, 23.11
Have tried 40.72 |

i had some weird issues with sp3 on a coupla of w2k boxes.
no idea of what to suggest in your case since you've uninstalled/reinstalled the vc drivers...
you can cross your fingers and can try a registry cleaner to clear out the old values. obviously, one solution would be to reinstall the os. |

Try installing a new version of the chipset drivers (VIA, in your case, I think)

I have installed the lastest 4in1 (1.45) and it seems a little better but GTA3 is still jerky. |

I have the same problem...
But not just in games or programs...
When I first installed W2K it would start up in under 1 min.
But now, it takes at least 6-7 min. to boot up. The only startup progs that I have running are norton anti-virus and a gainward o/c utility.
System Specs:
AMD T-Bird 1.4Ghz
60GB Samsung HDD
Shuttle AK31 mobo
256MB PC2100 DDR Crucial
Gainward Golden Sample GF3 Ti 200
Windows 2000 Pro
And the funny thing is that I have another box same setup but different components:
AMD Duron 950Mhz
Shuttle AK32 mobo
256MB PC133 SDRAM
PNY 32MB TNT2 M64
Windows 2000 Pro
And it has the same startup progs running plus MBM5 and VnC server. But boots up in less than 2 minutes. It does not have SP3 installed, while the T-Bird box does, along with the latest security updates.
So is it really worth it to get the security updates? Or does it just add more bloat to slow down an already slow OS?
Thanks... |

I know this sounds crazy but I had the same problem - No matter how often I would defrag, same result - basically the OS slowed down - I reinstall W2k and it was OK again for another 6-8 months. Same problem started occurring - went to XP then

Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 has a lot more security updates... Basically your running Windows XP "enhanced" so no matter what you install its going through checks.... I am having the same problem with mine, but I'm also running datacenter server on mine cause I'm working on hosting my own web server and ftp server and stuff like that so I need all the security features...I would uninstall SP3 and just install the security updates not the full service pack that should do it for some not all |

Removed SP3, I did an upgrade of 2K. So I am now running 2K without a service pack, but GTA is still choppy. |
