Sound card drivers in kernel?

Can I add my SB16 sound card drivers to the kernel? I've always just followed the example & compiled them as modules. I tried building them into the kernel, but the log sez "IO, irq, dma are mandatory". Perhaps some way to pass these values to the kernel in the bootup command?

Well, I found one reference to a kernel parameter sound=0x0TTPPPDI, but seems like the literature recommends compiling sound as modules, so I'll drop it.

Compiling modules into the kernel is intended for mass storage modules that might be needed to bring the system up. Sound is definitely not amongst those. Leave them as modules.

How are you configuring the kernel? Are there any boxes to input these values into in the menu / window / line on the screen, I have seen these in the sound card section, but it has been a long time (before the release of Linux 2) since I have set up a SB16 in Linux.

However, as peter says, you should probally leave them as modules so they can be unloaded when not in use.
