    AIM Spam Question

is there any way to stop all those aim spam messages about porn and crap? they must be using some kind of mass im'ing proggie, is there a program that can detect that? or do i just have to unaccept im's from suspicious sn's?

I haven't heard of any. You'll just have to do the manual routines I guess.

Just set it to "ask for confirmation" on receiving a message from someone not on your list.

Then if they're called "candy23252" or "ladylove2352" or "penisenlargmentguywhosjustIMingyoutospamthecrapou tofyou" you can just say "no."

Most likely the spammers pick up your sn in chat rooms. So no, a new one wouldn't automatically be on the "spam list". I know what ya mean though... I used to get tons of spam too, back when I used the AIM chat rooms alot. Sucks, don't it?

I don't get any IM spam at all, and I have no special setting to block them either. Is it AIM or the IM in the main AOL program?

In the rare times I'm on AIM I usually get nailed almost as soon as I login *shrug*

i'm not really sure where it comes from...but in any case i don't get any and i've had the same sn for nearly 4 years. i would just sign up for a new sn, and be careful what you do with it. Or you could always set AIM to block anyone who is not on your buddy list. it's in the settings somewhere.

    Hi Cracked,
they are probably getting to you one of two ways. One is you have it set to accept all messages without prompt or you have a profile option set.

On the first screen you have several options here to select how you want people to contact you.

    MyAim>Edit Options > Edit Preferences
hightlight the privacy to get the screen you are seeing below.

the other way people can get ahold of you is via the profile.
    MyAim>EditProfile.
Make sure that check mark is NOT checked, if it is checked everytime you are logged into aim it will list you in the aim directory and you can and will get spammed as well as get message from other people just looking for chat.

    Here is pic.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey Cracked,

I know the feeling. I don't use chat rooms either. Haven't been in one for over 3 years. I just regular AIM (and now AIM+). I have a list of screen names that have IMed me for porn/credit card debt/etc. My general practice for suspicious AIM sn's is to accept it, if it's spam crap, then I automatically block the sn from ever IMing me again. Seems to have helped greatly. I leave my computer on almost 24/7, and very rarely do I get spam now.
    Hope this helps ya.

Wow, that's interesting. I've never used that search feature and have never gotten spIMed on AIM but I have on AOL. Must remember to turn that thing off.

Thanks GroundZero, I finally decided to upgrade AIM, and switched to DeadAIM. Works well for what I need it for (logging mostly).
