Upgrading from 98SE to XP
Evening all,
I am in the process of purchasing new components to have a new computer assembled. Right now I am using an older computer with 98SE (don't laugh). My brother recently upgraded his computer from ME to XP using an upgrade CD. He has activated his upgrade with Microsoft. Before I finish with my new computer I was wondering if I use his upgrade CD for a few days on my computer. The reason for this is I am a quadriplegic and use an older voice recognition software that is no longer supported by the manufacturer but I am 99.9% will work with XP. I realize there are some that will question upgrading to XP if 98 is working but since 98 is no longer WHQL's new components I feel more comfortable going to XP. My second question is considering the Windows CD that came with my current computer. I was booking through the CDs that came with my computer. Not only did it come with a full version of Windows 98 SE with a certificate of authenticity but also a Windows 98 SE upgrade CD and finally a Windows 95 CD with serial number. If I do decide to upgrade to XP I think I should be able use the regular 98 SE CD if not would it be possible to put the 98 upgrade CD when prompted. I hope to be able to use a XP upgrade CD (pro) since I learned at this site from very knowledgeable posters. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You can use the winXP Pro Upgrade CD to upgrade your windows 98 or to clean install winXP from the scratch ..
If you decided to format and clean install your windows, winXP will ask you for an original windows 98 CD for verification reason during the setup process.

EoC. Gday

I think you might have been asking, whether you could use your brothers already activated copy of XP.
To check the compatibility of your VR s/ware.
MS allows 30 days for activation with XP.
In that time the s/ware is completely functional.
You just get nagged to activate it.
Just my opinion.
But to use it, to test for compatibility, before purchasing, seems entirely reasonable.
Chrs Rusty. Oh, and welcome to TIMO!

Thanks Rusty,
Sorry it took me a while to respond but you deciphered my question exactly. Sometimes I get long winded and it is easy to miss my actual question in the midst of my information overload.
Cheers back and G-day

Question:
Suppose EoC does install as a "trial." He will have to have entered the existing upgrade keycode.
So, once decided upon going w/ XP Pro, can I assume that he will have to call MS with the new upgrade keycode, or is there some way to change the keycode internally thru the registry, and where exactly would that be? Thanks.
