stop apps from installing

Question: How do I stop applications that do not require admin rights from being installed on pcs? For example, WeatherBug, Gator, etc...

Is there a way to restict this through a local policy on the desktop or is it better to stop this at the domain level?

I am at a loss for a solution. Any help or idea would be great!

Thanks

In Internet Explorer 6 there are some options that will help.

Under Tools, Internet Options... go to the Advanced tab.

Under the Browser section, make sure both "Enable Install on Demand" and the "Enable thrid party browser extensions" options are unchecked.

If you have a lot of PCs to deal with you may want to consider using IEAK (Internet Explorer Administration Kit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/default.asp) to Install/Deploy Internet Explorer on your site with the setup and options that you prefer.

This is a start!

Do you know if this is a quick registry change that can be made within the login script?

Does anyone have other ideas?

ohhh, lucky you, i just saw a program for this, but you're gonna have to do the digging

go to majorgeeks.com and check out their security section i believe, among the huge list of programs given, one of them said that it prevents the installation of spyware/adware programs such as the ones you have stated. Sorry that i cannot remember the exact name of it.

*also if it isn't in the security section, then it will be in the Miscellaneous section, because those are the only two i visited recently [i was looking for a good pop up blocker, man XP sucks..]

Good Luck

Try Phoenix

Works great, Or you could try mozilla, however there are some things I prefer about Phoenix.

I am looking for a software that doesn't require a monthly fee.

This software will simply block all apps that don't require local admin rights from installing on a machine within a network.

What are some people using?
