Plug & Play Issues With WinXP Pro
Hey folks,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a better way of disabling hardware detection in Windows XP than by just disabling plug & Play in the services section. I am sick and tired of having to do this and sick and tired of having windows XP install old outdated graphics drivers every time I uninstall the old ones to upgrade to the newest set. It seems to me that a while back I had this disabled, but I am not a Win XP guru, I only have it installed on my wife's computer.
Thanks in advance,
hifi

Actually I think linux_guru is talking about iNeb getting his post count up, not you hifi =)
A suggestion, don't be offended, if your wifes comp is working well, why bother changing the video drivers? just leave it alone =)Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

January 30th, 2003, 12:03 AM #8It's actually not working so hot...keeps getting these NV errors and I am wondering if it may not just be the fact that I have to overwrite the WinXP vid drivers with the Nvidia Det's that is causing the issue. Random lockups...etc....I was browsing around and saw that someone had posted possibly entering in through safe mode as an alternative as well, however I see that just as time consuming as disabling the service in windows itself....hmm.Originally posted by goldenbuddha

hmm sounds like you have a hardware conflict somewhere, do you have a piece of non regular piece of something in there? old school scanner interface card?
Any odd software?
And when Windows XP starts up, when it detects something new, isn't there an option to "Cancel" or "Skip" the detection? After which , you can install whatever driver you want.

Do you have XP golden? It is a pain...I wish it would give me the option to cancel...that is actually what I posted this thread for....is there another way around this problem besides disabling p&p??? I don't know....it doesn't seem to be a hardware conflict either, though this is the first time I am running a PCI based vid card on this board (ASUS A7V266-E) so I am not certain if there is a bios setting I have overlooked either....I am just trying to narrow down my solutions....

yes I do have XP, pro version tho.
When windows detect a new hardware (or non installed one) you will have that detecting hardware thing pop up, after which it will ask for more details regarding driver location. You can cancel at this point.
But from what I think your case is, Windows doesn't even give you this option, it just goes thru the motion of detecting and installing the driver for you.
You can do it the dirty way and just install the new driver over the old, I believe with newer Detonator drivers, you do not have to completely remove the old to use the new ones.Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Yes, but I think that is the whole problem...Nvidia recommends whole heartedly that you remove the old drivers and perform a clean install of the new. I am running Windows XP Professional as well. It just says (that silly little 'pop-up' bubble down in the right hand corner by the clock) "Found new hardware" and I try to cancle it by right clicking, hitting the "X" on the bubble everything...to no avail
it doesn't even give me the option to install my own drivers....there has to be a setting for this somewhere that I have overlooked.....it is pretty frustrating though....IMO....

BTW I guess I can add what I am doing here too. I just built this system for my wife today, the components are:
ASUS A7V266-E
Athlon XP 1900+ (not oc')
512 Nanya PC2100 DDR
GeForce 4 MX420 (PCI Version)
WD 120 Gb (Special Edt.)
Antec 300Watt P/S
Windows XP Professional (No other software installed exept for the Via 4-in-ones and Nvidia's Det 40.72 drivers which worked with this card in my other system just fine.)
The motherboard, cpu and Vid card are rock solid stable as I ran the mobo and cpu in my old system for 1 1/2 years with no issues and the vid card is about as old, but came from my old hp computer (the kids get the old TNT 2 card now
)

Hey Hifi, theres a new version for Nvidia, version 41.09, have you tried that?
Its odd, theres barely any hardware to have a conflict with. I might sound redundant, have you ran Windows auto update to patch everything?Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hey golden, I think I have this issue solved, but yet unresolved. It has to do with IRQ conflicts and the onboard CMEDIA sound chip. When I disable sound in the BIOS, my problems are solved. I never experianced the issue prior to this because I had always ran an AGP video card vs the PCI card I have in there now. I am just making an assumption, but by the way it sounds prior to locking up (the sound s-s-stutters and screeches a bit then the mouse freezes) I would almost say that the PCI bus is overloaded. When doing a search for this issue, I came across several sites confirming this with the A7V266-E motherboards...I am going to try and purchase a cheap little soundcard and see if that works. The problem with the onboard sound is that I can't assign an IRQ to it, I can only change the IRQ's of the other PCI slots and no matter where I put my NIC or Video card, it still causes issues. Thanks for the reply's dude....

I am sorry I couldn't help. But thanks for letting me know the possible issues, since my wife too has CMedia onboard audio =) but only 1 video card.
Good Luck!
A cheap and decent card for audio would be Creatives PCI 128 card, its simple, does what it needs to do, no frills, no surround, but good sound.Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
