| Application Mover
Anyone know of an application mover that I can use to move an application from one harddrive to another and still have it work properly on the new OS? I want to move some app's from an old hard drive with Win95 to a new HD with Win2K Pro. Is this possible or do I have to reinstall the apps on the new HD? Thanks in advance. |

Do you have the 2 HD's connected in the same computer?
You have to reinstall the apps. onto the Win2k machine.
In order for an app./prog. to work on the new machine, it must be registered w/in the Windows Registry and be installed properly, rather than Copy & Pasted into Win2k.
Sorry bud

I have never seen a tool for moving applications per se, except for the Windows XP migration tool ( that works pretty well, but your installing W2K, not XP ).
Each application is different. Some, like Quake2/3 etc...games, can be copied directly and will run perfectly fine without having to be reinstalled.
Others, like Office, will need reinstallation, but if you copy the directory before installation you can keep most of you current settings and all of your added information.

| Could you clarify this a bit? Won't copying the directory NOT solve the problem, or do you mean that there are config files in the directory that would not get overwritten in the reinstall? Thanks. |

There used to be a program that came with Partition Magic that did this sort of thing. Can't remember what version it came with nor what it was called. If I remember i'll post.

It seems that there was a program with Partion Magic called "Magic Mover" that might do the job. It was with version 3.x which I actually think I have in the basement someplace....
The problem may be that the application might have to have already been installed in the OS and that Magic Mover could then correct the registry among other things. My problem is that these apps were not installed in the new OS... I'll see if I can find Magic Mover and I'll post my result. Thanks for the help. |

correct me if I am wrong Arjay but are you trying to move a program from one installation to another? If so I don't think you will have much luck. Magic Mover and programs of it's ilk will probably not do much about files that a program installes in to the system directories of windows and so will leave these behind. The best way is always a re-install.

Edit really should read the post more clearly

I know the program Magic Mover, but what he wants it won't do, that was for moving the programs from C: to D:, changing the registry by reading the uninstall files(get's keys modified and other files from this looks for C: and changes it to D: ) he wants to move them form win98 to Win2k, only way is to upgrade the Win9x install to Win2k, that will work for most, or re-install the programs on the new computer.
edit forgot putting : ) next to eachother makes a
