| Office 2000 will not install
I have tried to up-date my office 2000 software (twice) but failed dismally. The first attempt resulted in a crash of word, exel etc. This was resolved by uninstall/re-install, the second attempt gave the same result but now the re-install failed producing an error message stating that
" This patch package could not be opened, verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid widows installer patch package"
Any help would be appreciated
Thank's in advance Lester1 (UK) |

Hello imac9556
Thank you for the welcome, the CD is OK I seem to remember that the second attempt involved an up grade patch but I can not remember the exact details. I've got this on my desk top 329115USA downloaded from Microsoft which I suspect is the problem " I think! |

Clean the CD before you try anything with it.
Next, try to repair your installation of Office using the CD.
If this doesn't fix the problem, I would uninstall Office 2000 remove any left over program folders and run a reg cleaner.
Defrag and Scandisk or Checkdisk
Next install Office 2000 with any custom options you desire.
Defrag
Next go to Office Updates and get the SP1 and 2.
Install them.
Defrag
You should be good to go with a lot of peace of mind.
Cheers! |

Lester:
Is an update necessary? Seems I ordered a free SP2 disk awhile back, as a result of a post here ; haven't installed it - I didn't even know there was a SP1 for Office 2000! Are they required to work in XP? I know a lot usually have to do with security and compatibility issues. Thanks.
Thanks for the link, Beemer. I see there's a SP-3!
Oh, and welcome Lester. What's your OS? Look's like there's an uninstall download for Win 2000. . .

I just re-installed 2000 on a XP machine.
I had some issues with the patch installs, namely SP2.
I to ordered that SP2 disk, I think it was fisheagle that posted that deal.
Anyway you have to install SP1 first, then SP2.
Make sure you close all running programs under 'msconfig' before updating.
Also you have to have the original office cd to do the patchs.
BTW, the problem I was having with the SP2 update, it was caught in a endless loop. It would install then start over.
This was in XP, did a install on 98se, no problems.

Thanks for the warning, WB:
That's exactly the info I was looking for. I may just leave things as they are for now, since I really don't use Excel all that much anymore.
Let's see if Lester follows Beemer's or your advice, and see if he's successful.
Thanks, again, for all of the info.

BTW, I use outlook, not outlook express and I noticed quite a few 'critical' security updates during the patchs.
It seems while outlook express is covered under 'windows update' outlook has to be updated through 'office updates'.
At least that was what I had to do.
I'm sure this is known, but just in case it's not.

Thank you for the advice Beemer,I had already uninstalled Office and encountered the problem trying to Re-install. However I have not checked the registry for any left-overs as I am a but reluctant to "Muck around" with something I'm not sure of. I have run reg clean (Microsoft version) but not a defrag, which I will now try. Stretching the old grey matter I seem to recall a reference to Works 2000 installations in the up-grade bumf on MS web site, I used to have this installed some time ago could there be a problem here? again I'm not to keen on tampering with the registry think I'll have pay another visit to the site. Oh sorry O/S 98SE. |
