NT4 stops at like DX6 or something like that. It's not a big 'gaming' OS.
EDIT - Actually, you just need to install at least SP4 to get the latest DX for NT. According to NT CompatibleLast edited by EvilRick; February 18th, 2003 at 10:50 AM.

Of course. Both are compatible. But you've got to get the NT version. DX9, they made an all-in-one package to cover all versions of Windows, but not so with 8.
Here's a link for the redistributable copy of DX9:

I'm pretty sure the DirectX versions for Win2K will also work with NT 4.0

Heh, it took me some time to post... so my last post is not in response to your last post Rick... you may well be right. I'd think it's worth a shot though.
And here's a link to a version of DX8.1 that you could try too:

I'm pretty sure this one will work with NT4, especially since it's labled "DX81NT".

Keep in mind, 2K has the NT 'kernel', I think that's the only reason it has that label. It distinguishes is apart from the 9X version.
Hey give it a shot, what are they gonna do, fire ya?

There was a release of 8.1 for 2K/NT which should work, I think you need the Service packs though.

Yeah, but you'd think they'd label it "DX81XP" or something like that. Then again, this is MS...Keep in mind, 2K has the NT 'kernel', I think that's the only reason it has that label. It distinguishes is apart from the 9X version.

With the latest service packs, Windows NT 4 supports DirectX 3, as well as DirectPlay 6.1. It does not support anything higher.
Why? 2k and XP are both NT. If they called it XP, people would probably assume it doesn't run on Windows 2000.Yeah, but you'd think they'd label it "DX81XP" or something like that.

Martee is right, NT4 is DX3 max. Very limitative for games, but I don't think that was the point of the OS.

I've been thru this w/NT4. DX3 is max. I do have a DX5 ver installed, but it did nothing 'cept maybe include some Directplay/input stuff. AFAIK, there is no M$$ software to enable directX video hardware acceleration in NT4, regardless of the vid card being capable. They could easily have written it, but it was W2K time by then.
