We need a little more info to help ya out...can you take a screenshot of your device list with the "unknown device" showing?
(Open device manager with that unknown device showing...hold hit alt-Printscreen, open Paint or another imaging program, click edit-paste or hit control-v, then save the file as a .jpg)
Then attach the file here of course.
Or tell us what category it's in so we can make some suggestions...
Thanks!
Mike

You probably just need to install the chipset drivers that came on the CD w/ the motherboard. I think that one has the SiS chipset, so you'll be looking for something like that. |

If this is a "run of the mill" K7S5A board then it should have on-board sound as well as a LAN connection. Being as there are several renditions of this board with the same model # it will be difficult to help other than to suggest that it's more than likely an on-board device that it enabled in the BIOS but has never been properly installed through the OS. Didn't you run the setup CD that came with the board? Need more info. |

I agree with TOAD - I'd bet my money it's the on-board sound.
I would advise going into the BIOS and disabling AC '97 Codec, and anything alse having to do with the on-board sound.

Ok I had already disabled the on board sound. There doesnt appear to be an on board lan on this board. I ran the set up disk that came with the board and it appeared to install the necessary components. So Im not sure. Take a look at jpeg though I dont know if this is what you are after. |

Sometimes its the order in which you put things in. I used to always mess up putting modems in.
What happens if you remove the device, does it come back?

Remove the device from the device manager do you mean or physically remove the PCI card? Could the problem be windows 98 itself as I already had windows installed on my hard disk when I changed the board perhaps I should of gone into the registry and deleted driver info before booting up. |

There should be a lan port right above the USB ports on the back, and you have to intall the SIS900 lan driver for it.
Also on a side note, I would have gone for DDR with an AthlonXP, the memory will choke that chip.
note to below, I did this very sucessfully the other day, upgraded someone from a 266 to a 1.3Duron on that board, went great, just have a little reg key that I run from command prompt, it deletes all hardware from the registry from a dos prompt.
