| Windows XP shortcut problem.
My dad at work ran windows xps restore to a preveous point.
After running this it wouldnt boot all the way as in the shell wont load but they could use the taskmanager to run programs.
Then they updated from the xp disk that fixed every thing back to the way it was but none of his shortcuts work now.
They all point to the right location but when click on them nothing happens. Even when you right click on them and hit open nothing happens.
Why is this and how can he fix it?

Corrupted registry.
The keys you wanna be looking at are HKCR/.lnk and those referenced from there (HKCR/lnkfile I think, plus a couple of CLSID keys) |

Download powertoys from the microsoft site. It's free. It has a utility to fix broken short cuts. | |

After a number of frustrating attempts to use my wiles and do tricky stuff a light bulb went on. If the links do not perform a function requested the system must not know what to do. How do you tell what to do. Went to CONTROL PANEL, TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS, FILE TYPES and added a file type of LNK, used the ADVANCED OPTIONS - ASSOCIATED FILE TYPE and told it to treat it as a SHORTCUT. Was also having the same problem with EXE's and COM's. Only difference was selected APPLICATION and DOS APPLICATION as the associated FILE TYPE
Everything started working and still does three days later |
