| Which is for me? 98se, 2k or XP???
I currently am using win98se, but am thinking maybe i should upgrade. I was originally gonna go dual boot win98se and win2k. But now i'm thinking whynot go with XP only?
I just basically use my system for games, music, internet, movies, etc..... What is everyones opinion?
Here are my system specs:
1.1Ghz tbird @ 1.16Ghz
640MB PC133 ram
20Gig (will be upgrading/adding when i can afford it)
16xDVD
40x16x10x CDRW
64MB Prophet II PRO
12MB Voodoo2 x2 (2 cards ruinning SLI)
SB LIVE!
Also i access the net thru my lan, so my computer still needs to be able to use my current lan (x-0ver cable to a win98se system)
Thanks

I'd say just stick with Win98SE. Going by what you said you use your computer for, it doesn't really sound like you need win2K. Unless of course you've already got it... if you do, I'd dual-boot 98SE and 2K. XP? As far as I'm concerned XP's not even a viable option... I woudn't touch the crap. |

What's XP going to do for you that you can't do already? Mac came out with OSX. I don't need it either! |

For me if it came down to dual booting and single booting I would single boot on one condition. Only if I could get XP Pro. I am totally against WPA. Unfortuantely I think you need like 4 friends to buy the Pro as well in order to be able to get it. Other than that, the game compatibilty of 2k is quite good. In the end I would probably reccomend in this order
XP Pro (no activation, so Corporate or whatever)
98SE (unless you are running into stability issues)
2K (unless you need more game compatibilty)
98SE & 2K

I cant remember where, but I'm positive someone posted a thread that had multimedia benchmarks on win98se vs. winXP and it was basically a dead-heat, with 98se coming out on top in a few things!!!!
So much for it being the great new multimedia OS its being hyped up to be.
However, I got very sick of win98se crashes and the fact that it couldnt take advantage of my whole 256mb ram. It certainly doesnt receive any performance boost from you 640mb, vs 128mb. This seems to be the problem with the win9X/ME kernel.
Because you say 98se is serving your purposes, I would not recommend buying either. However, the consensus among those "in the know" is that the win9X/ME kernel line of Windows OSes is just plain inferior to the NT/2k/xp line. |

I want to upgrade my OS so it will take advantage of my 640MB ram, also i was actually thinking about chucking another stick of 512 in there justy for the heck of it, so i don't want it going to waste with win98se. I still dunno what i wanna do tho, keep the info comming.

I would advise against XP at least until the hackers exploit the holes. M$ will release a service pack sometime in the spring. Win2K is nearly as developed as XP, and has service packs available. Keep 98SE for games and software that won't run or run as well on 2K. |

If you really wanna change your OS that much, I suggest dual booting Win98 and Win2k. |

ALOHA
Except for gaming-Win2k is Tooo COOL!!To me ALL win9x are just Beta tests for the real OS~Win2k!(Probably Xp Pro but haven't found it Yet!?!
Win2k Does away with the Heap memory limits of the 9xers and I can run more on 1 win2k machine in the backgound than I could using 2 networked win98se systems.Stability is AWESOME ususally all you do is lose the program that locked and you can safely shut the program down even under severe memory leaks that would Waste your 9xes.Then maybe a little MemTurbo and restart the program.Restart Program NOT Reboot System!! (-:
Installing win2k is the DREAM!!!With Win9xers I found it best to strip the hardware down and setup slowly loading drivers as needed! The first time I threw Win2k in it was a fully carded system including 2 Nic cards. As I waited for the usual found new hardware boxes to popup~NOTHING Happened!!I thought somthing SERIOUSly had gone wrong~nothing detected!Open up Device manager and WOW~ALL~YES ALL cards,Video,Audio.2 Nics.Drives,etc..ALL ready and waiting FOR ME!!TOO CooL!
And Yes It even Runs DOS games if you have a FlashBack day!
The only problem for me its like going to CABLE Modem~Once you tasted it you can't go back to old fashioned Win9xers!!!
