But is there a way to only move apps and data?
The old harddrive is slaved to a new one on a new board the master has a nice clean install of 98se on it,, 98 se is only the old one with the apps too.. but so are the old drivers etc

you're best off just reinstalling your apps. all app installs put in registry entries and system files, so moving them might make them not work.

i think moving data is best achieved the old fashioned way. just dig through folders and drag and drop from one drive to another.

Xcopy is nice for cloning a drive, but if you're just moving data, use Windows Explorer and Drag-n-Drop it.

There are some programs that will move apps so you dont have to reinstall them (App Mover sounds familiar) but in most circumstances, I'd just say reinstall them from their disks.

Great idea, if I had disks..
It's not my computer, and I have upgraded and added another hard drive..
I wanted it ready to rock when I gave it back.. now I'm just at tilt.

I can't say how it works, but I've seen this one posted by our members before.

Application Mover

If you have a "clean" install, I'd suggest backing up your registry prior to "installing" apps that way.

completely off the subject, but anyone else here notice that that xcopy command spells hickery? . Thanks for the advice though surreal, I've tried to do that before and ended up with nothing but junk...

Filed away under stuff I'm sure I'll need again sometime.

Sam

Yeah, that's why it's so easy to remember I've used xcopy with Win98 several times, and it works great for cloning.

/H Copies hidden and system files also
/I If destination does not exist and copying more than one file, assumes that destination must be a directory
/C Continues copying even if errors occur
/K Copies attributes. Normal xcopy will reset read-only attributes
/E Copies directories and sub directories, including empty ones. Same as /S /E. May be used to modify /T
/R Overwrites read-only files
/Y Overwrites existing files without prompting

Sorry to hear that the "app mover" didn't work, surreal Hope you didn't loose anything important
