Ok, i just recently switched to Linux as my O/S of preferance..... after using Windows for many years, got sick of it...... the main thing is that I can see the many capabilities that Linux can have!
When installing Linux on my pc about a month ago........... ok maybe like 2 months ago! it asked me >>>
Please choose the installation of Linux that you want to setup>
1) Worskstation
2) Mail Server
3) Router
4) <www> Server
5) FTP Server
I immidiately thought, dannng my pc an ftp server!....... sweet..... i got the bandwidth... i got the fast pc..... i got the stuff, why not... only one thing.....
is it really possible to setup my pc to be an ftp server? (((( plz say it is )))
I have another pc anyways... i dont' mind having this one "serving" information to my other ones and to "authorized" users....
Point is that, i know there has to be a way, or a chance...... otherwise why the hell would linux give me those options! ?
Finally, If possible.... I just want to setup my pc to be strictly an MP3 server..... so i can have my friends download from it when ever they want.... and or to share my music with the world.... "authorized few"..... heheheheh
either way..... Is it illegal? to have an mp3 server as long as I don't go around telling ppl that i share or sell or in any way promote or get money off those ppl who worked hard to put that music together..... I totally do not accept any credit for it.... and i give it all to them...... I just want to share the little music that i have with ya guys....
By way, I've had linux for a while now... and believe me...... IMPRESSIVE!..... yet slow....
but still very impressive..... i tried that "hdparm" u guys showed me and that kinda worked...... and even have it to "journalized reifer fs filesystem" i heard from you guys that that was faster......
THanx for the Help!
Plz REply |

the whole issue with downloading and sending mp3s is an invisibile line. i guess it all depends on how you feel about sharing out music. some people consider it stealing. others dont
as for the server, check with your isp if you are allowed to setup an FTP |

about "check with your isp if your are allow to setup an ftp"
ok...... i totally don't care if i can or not... im paying 50 dollars for a reason... and i dont' plan on taking this "FAR FAR FAR" i just want it to be able to be online.... when i want it to... and so <you> can be able to point and click and download any song as u wish... about stealing.... im totally against that...... then again..... we pay for the internet... we pay for taxes... we pay for everysingle thing in america!.....
im pretty sure we're entitled to some "sharing" here.... now....i'm not making money off these ppl.... and i dn't plan to take this to major heavy traffic..... just a few ppl... plus It would be really cool if linux could do that...........
although, thanx a whole lot for <sharing> your thoughts with me..... and replying aSap!
thanx (groundzero) |

"check with your isp if your are allow to setup an ftp"
Well, I run an HTTP and FTP off of my puter (own domain name, too). I don't have permission. I am with you. You pay 50 bux a month to use broadband....why not use your own server on it? I could care less if my ISP likes it or not. |

No, you cannot share music files on the internet. It's illegal, it infringes copyright laws. You ARE allowed to make 1 backup copy of any media that you buy which contains copywrite material. This includes music tapes and CD's, and I believe VHS Tapes and DVDs.
You can have the backup copy be on your computer hard-drive. While making a second backup copy via a backup program isn't really covered under the laws, I don't think it would be an issue. Nor would it be a big issue if you created a backup CD, and kept the computer backup files as well. The law is too old to really cover situations like that.
However, the point of the law is, that you can create for yourself a means in which you only purchase the material once, and can use it for the rest of your life, even if the media fails. The key here being, that you can use it. You cannot loan out your backup copy while you continue to play the regular copy, or copies on the computer.
Copyright law is clear on this. What all these court cases are saying isn't that the copyright law is wrong and sharing is okay, just that companies that provide file sharing services for ANY type of file can't be held responsible when people use their services for illegal civil issues like infringing on copywrite holders.
Yes, Linux can be used as an FTP server, as a web server, or what have you. That doesn't mean that your internet provider allows it. You entered into a contract with them, and you pay for that contract. If the contract says you can't have an FTP server, then I would suggest you not run one. While the most they are likely to do is send you an email telling you to shut it down or they'll shut you down, there are other things they can do. They can charge you the amount for their business contract that allows FTP servers, which is most likely a quite large sum that you would be unwilling to pay. If you refused too, they'd cut your service and charge you for it anyway, and it would end up on your credit record for 7 years, which isn't good. Though it's unlikely, they could also attempt to sue you.
You can, and are welcome to, set up ftp service for any local machines on your LAN, and share your backup copies of your legally obtained CD's with your other computers so you can listen to your songs on whatever computer you want. |

The biggest prob is with mail servers, or severs that use too much bandwidth. Most ISP's will allow small personal FTP/HTTP servers, provided you don't start getting 100,000 hits per day or something.
Mail servers set up wrong can be targeted by spammers for relay, and ISP's definitely DO NOT like that!
An email or a check of your ISP's FAQ's may uncover what the ISP's like / don't like.
Cheers

everyone here is right........ then again..... i don't need someone telling me about the LAW... when i have read it myself...... i don't plan on making it a super server with over 100,000 hits a day and stuff........ just a basic..... super small server only serving information when i turn the thing on...... i understand that sharing mp3's online is illegal and it violates <copyright laws> then again..... there are no laws dat say that i can't have an ftp server on running from my house and put an mp3 or two in there? now is there...... im not making any money here... im not making it "public" and I totally agree with what someone said.... ( setup a lan based server to serve all those computers i have in my house..... now is that illegal?... )
and (( embj )) how did you get your server running? so i can get started as soon as possible... ((((( i'll keep everything legal guys!!! )))) |
