win98 shutdown problem

My wife’s PC runs win98se and just the other day started rebooting instead of shutting down. I haven't tried anything yet to fix it just hit the power button before it reboots. Plan to run SFC, but don't know of anything else to do.

Suggestions appreciated

I had a similar problem with my comp and it turned out to be caused by some options in the bios. These were the 'Ring on ....' and there were several of them but I cant remember exactly what they were at the moment but I will find out. When I disabled them the comp shutdown perfectly.

Wake on LAN
Wake on Modem
Wake on Ring(?)

Basically turn off all those Wake On... settings unless you really need them.

There have been many issues with Win 98 not shutting down right in the past. I suggest you check out Microsofts homepage for details.

The MB is a shuttle 591 and does not have any wake options. I ran SFC and found quite a few missing or corrupt *. DLL’s but that did not fix the problem. I ran the win98se shutdown supplement and that did not fix the problem. In reading some of the links I reached through korgul's link I found it may be caused by a prog not shutting down properly. I try to keep the progs that start a boot to a minimum so I checked there and found quicken, recently added prog, had several thing running and when I turned them off the system is back in line!
