Windows XP Shut down Message
My friend and I both have the same version of Windows XP Pro with all the same updates. When I shut down my comp it logs off and powers down. His brings up a message that says "It is now safe to shut off your computer" I have seen this before on various comps with various OS's and was wondering what is the variable that causes this on some computers and not others? Is there an option that can disable this? Thanks!

It's an older computer, Athlon 500mhz. I haven't looked to see what kind of PS it is. Could that be what determines it?

Bah. You can change that in your bios. It's often called a soft shut down or something like that. Go and look In you power managment and look for something like that.
When you began, we ended.

The only option in the bios is the soft off and that determines what your computer does when you hit the power button when windows is loaded.

From what I understand, it has to be an ATX power supply as AT power supplies don't support it and the board has to support it as well.....some do, and some don't, at least ones that old is the case......

It's probably an AT power supply. That kind has the switch that you depress and have to unpress to turn off power from the computer.

I have upgraded several computers from Win98 to WinXP. In Win98 they would complete a soft shutdown, but in WinXP they gave me a message to say that my computer was now ready to be shutdown and I had to complete the task manually. Why the difference. Any ideas?

Win XP Soft shutdown problem
No, computer in Device Manager just lists Standard PC. Is there any way of changing it to ACPI Uniprocessor PC

Sometimes XP does not detect that the BIOS is ACPI compatable and sets the OS up as Standard PC. If the BIOS is indeed ACPI compatable, to get around this when installing XP, at the very beginning, when the first files are being copied to the HD before installation begins if you press F6 (I think it's F6) it will take you into a screen where you can select ACPI or several other options.
I believe there is a way to change this after the fact but the procedure is buried deep somewhere in some documentation I have. Send me a PM so I have a way to get back to you and if/when I find it I will send it to you.If you can't say something nice... SAY IT REALLY LOUD!!

With this information I looked up the Microsoft Knowledge Base and there are good articles for Win 2000 MKBA - 216573, 246236 and for Win XP MKBA 314088. Worth a read before trying to change to ACPI compatible. Thanks for the help.

In 'Computer' in 'Device Manager' my computer is listed as ACPI Uniprocessor PC. I am running windows XP. My computer turns off automatically but i want the screen that says 'It is now safe to turn off your computer' or some sort of prompt that forces me to push the power button. Any ideas??? thanks

I have had this happen to me on many machines with different Mobo / CPU combo's. I will be watching this thread closely as I would love to know the fix, I think I have tried all the things that MS has listed..
DoctorReno, if you find that article I'd love a copy.

I just installed Standard PC instead of ACPI Uniprocessor PC and now I get the screen which says 'It is now safe to turn off your computer' but I am not sure why this is required or what the differences are between the two.
