I really need IE to get off my desktop!

Okay, I have a minor problem with XP/IE6 that is driving me nuts. I have repeatedly deleted the IE icon from my desktop and it keeps coming back. I actually hate desktop icons, and like to keep only 8 on the task bar. To clarify, this is where it pops up, on the desktop section of the task bar. It will not go away, even utilizing TweakUI. Does anybody know where to find a setting for this in the registry before I go chopping it up?

Before you say it, I know I'm being picky. That's just the way I am.

    Try www.ieinfosite.co.uk
Not sure if they have that info or not but overall a good resource for IE.

I dunno if it'll work in XP (though I don't see why not) but in Win98 there's an option in the properties to remove it from the desktop. Right-click on the desktop icon > properties > advanced and scroll down till you see it

Edit: BTW, I've never actually tried this.

Thanks for the info so far and the link. None of the easy methods has worked. This seems to be one of those quirky things that plagues certain machines and does not affect others.

I did see somewhere that there is a version of msconfig for XP, but I do not believe it comes with it. I'm not at my XP box right now, either.

    msconfig is packaged with XP.

Try this -- on your desktop -- right-click and go to "arrange icons by" then uncheck "Show desktop icons". Then you will NEVER see a desktop icon again.

    (I Hate desktop icons, too!)

Right click the background on the desktop
    click "properties"
    click the "desktop' tab
on the bottom of that tab click "customize desktop"

in the "desktop icons" area at the top ,uncheck the boxes of the icons you don't want to see

    that should do it

The way I've always gotten it off my desktop 98se and 2kpro. Go to control panel/internet options/advanced/ scroll down and uncheck show internet explorer on desktop. Started doing it that way when it kept coming back on me!
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it

Strange my XP pro desktop was installed clean by default with only the recyclebin. And even there was a regedit trick to remove that one too.
My desktop is clean and thirsty..err...tidy!!

There might be an answer on www.tweakxp.com ....

    Try this...

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...=top&ordinal=6

in tweak UI in this powertoys kit there is a section about the desktop so you can enable and disable certain desktop icons....

Such as recycle bin, IE, Network places, my computer etc.

Thanks for all of your help. None of these things worked, alas!

What I ended up doing is removing the desktop from the task bar and just made a new toolbar entitled "Quick Launch 2" which contains everything but an IE icon.

Still something to make me scratch my head though why it would not stay deleted.

Are you sure you are logged in as administrator?
You can change settings with "gpedit.msc" then. Just type it in the "run" window.

Thanks DutchMaster, I had not tried there. I'll let you know how it goes.
