| Finally got a good kernel build
Hi all,
I finally got a fully working (so far) build of kernel 2.4.16 to replace the RedHat 7.2 stock version
During my adventures I noticed that RedHat ships with a variety of sample kernel config files that can be easily customised. I simply loaded up the athlon optimised version, added support for my motherboard chipset & got rid of all the modules I didn't need.
Advantages so far include:
My new kernel is over 100k smaller than RedHat stock (now 700K). Although this isn't exactly tiny its still an improvement.
Now compiled with Athlon optimisation
My UDMA 66 HD now benches higher than before (even though I was using the info supplied by Otheos that allready significantly improved performance).
All in all I am very pleased with the new build. Just a few via chipset bugs to iron out
As I am very bad at compiling kernels I found modifying an existing working config to be a great help.
OK I have finished rambling now
Regards

Hey pb,
Waiting to download XFree86 when I get a minute at work. As Whisper said it looks like lots more work in getting the system well setup than getting the basics up & running
Still hunting for the kernel option that stops me getting drive_seek errors on my Abit Kt-7 (I found it the other day but have lost it now ).
I am thinking of giving Debian a try at work next week. I am using an apt wrapper for rpm's at the minute but it is buggy & not much use over my 56K line (think I will do an ftp install of Woody over works 2 Mbit link ).
Regards

Expect I will be asking for lots of Debian help, having never really used it much (and being a bit of a Slacker ).
Is upgrading from potato to sid or woody as simple as changing the relavant source locations & running an "apt-get dist-upgrade" or something similar (can't remember exact command)? If so then that is very & loads easier than compiling everything from source if you have a good internet conection.
I really wish RedHat would sort out the dependency issues associated with the RPM system.
Regards

Well after the hols i hope to put a version of Debian on this box so you'll not be the only one asking the questions
kinda looking forward to using it again been ages since I last dipped the toe in. My biggest worry however is trying to get it to recognise my high-point controller on my kt7-raid. Will have to learn quickly to get it to boot properly with a good kernel compile.

Have to agree that a kernel upgrade could well be needed to get that high-point working.
Does the Debian package system allow for easy upgrades of kernels?

Not really sure on that on but would expect that it would be so.
I signed up for Debian weekly news on the site and it comes with some good info and keeps me up to date with when the next release may be due
