    Fav. linux apps

I've been playing w/ linux for some time now and I think it's time to make the transition. What are your favorite apps for linux?

I'm looking for anything that's worth mentioning. I'm especially interested in different media (audio and video) players.

    Good media playback app: MPlayer

Since I am a tech writer, my favorite Linux app would have to be OpenOffice. I also like WINE for those rare few Windows-only apps that I always seem to be needing.

I love xine, as it can playback movies in ASCII art. Really freaks people out when I do that to them.

My speakers and all that are on my Win Box.. My favorite program? Opera and X-Chat (I know they aren't audio/video players also. )

Although on my last install I did have XMMS running. Not bad.

Opera - web browser (not free)
    Gaim - IM client
Rhythmbox - iTunes like music player
    X-Chat - IRC client
    Mutt - CLI-based email client
VIM - text editor w/ awesome features
Bluefish - HTML editor. I now choose VIM over this
    SSH - Secure SHell client
Screen - Full screen window manager. I consider it a program though...check it out.
Xine and Mplayer - video players
VLC - Video LAN client; awesome video player with cool network play capabilities
    The GIMP - image editor
OpenOffice - Open source replacement for Microsoft Office

That's it on the desktop side. I used to run the following programs on my Linux server, but I've since switched it over to FreeBSD.

    Apache w/ mod_php4
    PostgreSQL
    MySQL
    OpenSSHD
    Squid
    BIND
    qmail

These tools make me a more productive individual on a daily basis.

is opera not free in linux? i thought it is!

anyway i love to play with The GIMP and some other graphic programs (which were in the SuSE linux pack)
and for programing i use kwrite it's usefull and it helps with programing (it marks things in " " and other things!)

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. To get rid of the banner ads you have to pay, so it's not really free like open-source browsers.
