Question
Connected to the Internet-but unable browse anything

Hey,

I aquired this little problem:

My modem(56k) connects to the internet, but I cant browse anything in IE, do any traceroutes, play any online games, I cant even use mIRC or something like that. Its like even if the computer is connected, something is blocking the connection.

Might want to add, that this appeared immediately after I removed some GATOR trash from my comp with Ad-aware.

Any ideas how I might fix this annoying problem? So far I tried to reinstall Win98, replace the modem and reinstall TCP/IP.

Thanks in advance.

Is "use a proxy server for this connection" unchecked ?

(Tools --> Internet options --> Connections --> Settings)

Welcome to TIMO.

I've had problems with being able to connect to the internet and not being able to surf, ping etc. It had to do with the TCP/IP settings in the registry. The culprit program was new.net (which is installed with Gator). Removing Gator may have messed up the TCP/IP settings in the registry.

I found an article in the MS knowledge base that seems unrelated but it shows how to remove the TCP/IP settings directly from the registry. Some steps won't apply but it does get rid of the default TCP/IP settings.

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;299393

I've used this technique many times when a dial up connection or high speed connection is made and can't do anything in the i-net.

HTH
