Does multitasking slow system performance?

My computer always has a LOT of processes running at at a time. There are 15 processes alone that have icons in the system tray, many others running along side those. I have 1GB of ram to run all these programs so ram is not really an issue here. Task Manager says that almost all of these programs use 0% CPU power.

If I have tons of programs running but have more than enough ram and the programs take almost no processing power, will running extra programs slow down my system's performance in games?

Yes, technically it can slow you down. Each application is allocated memory and is running in memory.

Now how this will affect you is minimal. With that much ram you would have to be running some serious stuff to really impact your gaming experience. Most system tray apps don't have a large memory footprint, so they do not have that big of an impact.

Yes they can slow you down. Although it might be such a small amount that you can't even notice it.

But the bigger problem with having so many appications running in the background is the possibility for confict. More things running = more chance that some of the programs will conflict with each other and crash or crash the system.

Here's what my system tray looks like...
