That's what you saved me from, Patrick, many wasted hours, which we all know are better spent than trying to figure out Billy's Boys' coding shortfalls. Thanks much.

What caused it I believe is that I installed some windoz updates, and didn't reboot right away.

I thought I was hosed.

Thanks again Patrick, for having the patience to deal with MS .

| Restore disk doesn't have Recovery Console
I had the same problem after loading SP1. I contacted Toshiba regarding my laptop because I was unable to get to the Recovery Console from their recovery disk. Turned out that Toshiba does not provide the Recovery Console as part of its load of Windows XP Home.
I was told I needed to find someone else who had a full version of Windows XP Home and borrow their disks to get to the Recovery Console.
Any ideas on how otherwise I could access a command prompt in order to follow the steps for replacing the bad files without losing all my data? I checked with Circuit City (where I bought the laptop) and CompUSA, the local Toshiba authorized service center. Neither could help me without sending the PC out for 1 to 2 weeks for service, although CompUSA could send someone to my house for about the same amount of money as a copy of XP Home Upgrade. |

I don't know that much about DOS anymore.
But try:
A:> c:\
or
A:>cd c:\
or
A:> cd c:
or
A:>c
Just keep trying diffent combinations of changing to the C directory.

Do you have access to another computer? Go to bootdisk.com, and find and download the bootdisk you need to a floppy. Then boot your xp to the floppy.
They have it all. Good luck.

Hmm, if you can get the 6 boot floppies from microsoft, you should be able to run recovery console from there. You basically act like you are going to do an install but you choose "repair" and then you see the option for recovery console. Recovery console isnt the same as DOS though, there are only certain commands etc. But you can copy files FROM a floppy or cd to the hard drive while using recovery console.

Hi everybody,
I was just victim of the same Microsoft bug too (yesterday evening). And today it's solved...Thanks to everyone here, but most of all, a big THANKS to PATRICK !!!!! Great job, Mister !!
I just had to expand the Cab files from the CD to the directory...but even that was mentioned in your note, Patrick. The only problem is if you don't have the XP CD on hand or if you don't have a floppy or no diskets or no other PC (other than the one having the BUG that is...) connected to the Internet...and if you hadn't the Recovery console installed already...(Now I have !).
Thank you so much,
Nicolas |

A few more details about this problem:
If you formated your drives with NTFS then you must have a Windows XP disk. MS DOS or win98 boot disks cannot read an NTFS drive. Otherwise any boot disk will work.
After you get things back up and running you should install the recovery console for next time:
To install the Recovery Console as a startup option
With Windows running, insert the Setup CD into your CD-ROM drive.
CLick Start and select Run.
Type the following where D: is the CD-ROM drive letter:
D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Also to make future recoveries easier you should change a local security policy setting to allow access to the floppy and other drives:
Open Local Security Policy (secpol.msc)
Expand: Local Policies
Select: Security Options
Enable the setting: Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy and access to all drives and all folders
Good luck. |

hey everybody
this is sarah again, look 3 notes above.
finally i fixed mine. to access to my c drive i made a update windows disks (about 6 disks). then i boot the computer from a removable device (A) and put disks one by one. do not worry it won't delete your data. from there i accessed to my c:. then i burned a cd with all those 4 files that patrick has mentioned and everything worked fine. i burned cd because i was not able to copy stuff into system from the A.
thank you everybody.
Cheers *-:

| Someone please help me! I did exactly what Patrick said to do. But when I got the the part to type cd servicepackfiles\i386, it told me that it was an invalid directory. So then I skipped that and tried to copy the files. Of course that didn't work. I guess I need to expand the files. How do you expand files on the Recovery Console? BTW, I am using the 6 boot disks from Microsoft.
Thank you! |
