Hi Denise !!
I had the same problem: I had to expand the files. In fact the files are compressed in .cab type files. What I did was to go the i386 directory on the CD (cd i386) and expand the files from there. I think I typed something like:
expand shell32.dl_ /f:shell32.dll C:\windows\system32
This line will expand the file shell32.dll from the compressed file shell32.dl_ et copy it in the right directory. I gave the precision that it should only decompress one file (/f:shell32.dll) from the compressed file, but it may not be necessary.
Write the same lines for all 4 files mentioned by Patrick.
Good luck Denise !

| Recovery with Microsoft Floppies
OK. So, I've had the same issues since last week. I don't have a Windows XP cd because it came pre-installed on my computer when I purchased it. I called Sony and they basically just told me my only option was to do a system recovery and lose all my data. Then I found this thread! Woo Hoo!
But, I have some questions. I'm trying to recover via the 6 floppy disk method. So, I got to the recovery console and then was unsure what codes to enter as everything mentioned on here was regarding the CD method.
Does anyone have specific instructions regarding the 6 disk method, once you're in the Recovery Console?
Any help would be appreciated it.
Thanks,
Sam |

just insert disk one and follow the instruction, it will ask you to insert other disks one by one
good luck |

I did all of that. What I need to know is the code to enter once I get into the recovery console in order to restore my computer, for example:
Patrick wrote the code to use for a cd reboot. How do I do the same thing but coming from a floppy in my A drive? |

I don't think my issue is quite the same as everyone else's - I just get the message about MSGINA.DLL needing replacement.
Lots of people here seem to have problems trying to get to a command prompt etc.
If you can get into Windows (I used 'Last known good), close 'Explorer.exe' in Task Manager and then use the 'Run', still on the CTRL-ALT-DEL menu, to copy a backup over the current one.
Closing Explorer prevents Window's protection stuff messing up the plan. You can then restart and should be ok! |

I guess I need to expand the files. How do you expand files on the Recovery Console? BTW, I am using the 6 boot disks from Microsoft.
Thank you! | This is how I fixed the SHLWAPI.DLL: basically I kept getting Associsdangerous cannot login. This should work with all shlwapi.dll errors. I tried the recovery console with the bootable CD and I kept getting incorrect Administrator password. I needed an updated version of the SHLWAPI.DLL file so I copied it off another computer that booted OK with the service packs installed. SHLWAPI.DLL is in c:\windows\system32 basically you go into the command prompt and type:
copy c:\windows\system32\shlwapi.dll a:
Now you have the updated shlwapi.dll on a floppy disk.
computerhope.com has the link to download the 6 bootable floppies with SP1 which when I booted off the floppies then I could access my C:\ drive. Once in the command prompt I typed:
cd windows\system32
ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi.old
copy a:\shlwapi.dll
then now you have an updated SHLWAPI.DLL file in your c:\windows\system32 directory and this worked fine for me. |

| Finally worked, with some help
Thanks for all then input!
Well, I finally got the laptop fixed without losing the current data, but I needed some professional help. I did not have a recovery disk with Recovery Console on it. I tried booting from a floppy boot disk set that I downloaded via bootdisk.com (nice site), but I had not used a floppy before on the laptop, so I couldn't get it to recognize the floppy drive.
I brought the computer to a local storefront computer shop. They had XP recovery disks. However they couldn't get past the required Administrator password, and I tried any that I might have used when installing and nothing worked. I don't recall entering one when loading the laptop originally from the Toshiba recovery disks.
Anyway, they had to remove the hard drive from the laptop, hook it up to another computer, then write the 2 correct files to my drive. Once the drive was put back into the laptop, it booted up fine. |

| WinXP msgina.dll & shlwapi.dll problem...
Hey ,Guys
I thought , i should say something bout this
I had the same problem XP wouldn't boot anymore , I have a Toschiba Labtop with not floppy and it came with XP preinstalled.
The only option was to boot from a Boot CD which i do not have.
Now what i did was to
1.) User Bart's Way to produced a Boot CD(.ISO File)
2.) Burn this onto a CD
3.) Boot my Laptop.
For this i used a well working Second Laptop with XP to do it
I need the c:\windows\i386 directory to produce the boot CD.
After booting up my damage Laptop, i pretty much follow the Instruction to boot to Recovery console.
Guys,if any body needs the ISO image for XP, send me an email and i will post it to a link to be downloaded. Note the Image i produce was for XP pro.

dear god, this place seems like the closest I've come to the answer I need.
Problem: I'm helping a friend who just installed a SP for his WinXP Home and now his computer says there is an error in C:/windows/system32/config/system file. He/we tried using the Install/Repair module but it doesn't get far (well, doesn't even properly begin) before it locks his computer and he must hard reset it.
my only thought was to inflate the System file from the CAB on the install disk and replace his System file.
either that or is there a way to REPAIR the system file?
Before I proceed I wonder if you guys know if the previous solutions might work?
Or will it cause more damage?
oh, and this friend is using NTFS and has partitioned about 5 partitions on this 80gb drive.
I don't see much on that partition so maybe I should just save the MY DOCS and reformat/reinstall?
I really hope the nice smart people here will have a clue for me.
Any help appreciated. |
