| Windows 98 Explorer problem
This is a problem I've been having for some time now. I'm running Windows 98 first edition and it is an Explorer problem.
When I put a CD into the drive everything is fine and I can look at the various folders and so on. If I eject this CD and put another in, the old information from the previous CD is still there. Clicking on refresh on the view tab doesn't refresh it nor does closing explorer and reopening it. If I right click on the CD drive in the left hand pane and try to eject, the program freezes and eventually I have to reboot.
What can be the matter? |

Make sure you have Auto-insert notification enabled in device manager. Also check in the registy to enable it.
Here's a description:
Within regedit navigate into the following folders:
HKEY_USERS
.DEFAULT
SOFTWARE
MICROSOFT
WINDOWS
CURRENTVERSION
POLICIES
EXPLORER
Once within the Explorer folder Double click the file: "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" if present and change the value to "95 00 00 00"
If NoDriveTypeAutoRun is present follow the below steps:
click Edit from the drop down menu
click new
click binary value
enter "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" as the name
enter "95 00 00 00" as the value
Once the above has been completed exit the registry, reboot the computer and your issue should be resolved.

I was the same way. Put a CD in and all sorts of crap would start. Then I noticed that in explorer, when I had a CD in and switched it, the old info would still be there. Refresh...etc...nothing would work. I would have to reboot to get it to update. Turned auto-insert notification on and all that stopped. I have to tolerate it. |

Thanks fatal xception, I didn't have to mess with the registry, just ticked the auto insert box in device mangler and restarted.
Just tried it and it's fine now, apart from the CD asking if I wanted to install it I will have to tolerate it too!
I would never have thought that this was the cause of the problem, just goes to show!
Happy Christmas, we have just 85 minutes left of it here! |

you could just put autoinsert on and when you want to put a cd in and dont want to use it right away, just hold down the SHIFT key until the cdrom goes inactive, i do it all the time, and it is very helpful. Also at the time Shift key has no immediate response so it wont hurt anything |

Also with tweak UI you can set it to autorun Audio CDS only, tho I don't know if this will cause you old problem to re-appear. had that prob a long time ago, never knew why (wasn't here back then) But after thinking about it, autoinsert was shut off. thought it was just my CDrom. |

Hey, Judolizard, just tried what you said and it works just like you say! You chaps are great!!
I expect the problem would return if it was set to auto run audio CD's only but thanks for the suggestion Wizzard.
edit/
Is that holding down the shift button documented somewhere in Windows, if it isn't it should be!
edit/
further edit/ just looked in Windows Help and the Shift thing is documented there.
