Welcome aboard
I've been toying with the idea of Mandrake if I can get UD to run on it. Can't sacrifice a cow If you haven't checked out DC hop on over and give it a try http://www.techimo.com/forum/t2307.html |

....ah, well I certainly agree that Mandrake 8.1 is powerful, full-featured Linux and can outshine MS Win XP in many areas. However, there are still a number of programs I would like to see in Linux, and it would be great if hardware vendors would get up to speed with Linux drivers.
I'm using Mandrake 8.1 and SuSE 7.3 about 99% of the time unless I need photo quality printing.
Linux has come a long way very quickly. With the latest nVidia opengl drivers for Linux I do enjoy a few 3d games:
gltron has improved a great deal and the binary installs easily www.gltron.org also parsec is pretty cool www.parsec.org (came with SuSE 7.3 Professional), then there is HeavyGear II, and of course Descent, Chromium, and some others.
I don't do any programming (yet) but it is nice to know Linux has so many good tools. The price is certainly right.
As for Office apps, I think Star Office 6 (still beta) is the best choice for Linux. With near perfect MS Office compatibility I still can hardly believe that it's free for personal use. SO6 should be around $40 when it comes out in the box with manuals - I'll buy it. I discoverd that installing truetype fonts in Star Office 6 is as easy as pasting them into the font directory, so I ahve every tt font from my Windows partition and more.
What I would like to see most in Linux is high-end sound and video editing software, not that I would do very much with it but it would make Linux more attractive. Also Linux needs the common programs like CD encyclopedia, kids interactive learning software -particularly the Jump Start series, and programs like those home improvement mini-cads that can help you build an addition or do landscaping -including material estimates, and a "Thomas Guide" or some other maps on a CD would be nice. ..and the wish list goes on.... |

Yeah, Linux has tons of programs. I used to get about 75wpm typing now I get about 30wpm . Luckily for me there is a program called Ktype which will let me learn typing all over again. I'm at this one part and I can't seem to hit x and z fast enough or sometimes I hit the wrong one. The drill goes something like this.
x zx zz zz x xz z zx x x x xz zx xx
Its kinda hard to hit the right button everytime. |

Excellent!! I have heard it is better than XP from more than a few people. I think LInux is and has been more than ready for the desktop.

I'm with CMonster on this one. Good sound editing and a Linux port of AutoCAD2000 would get me off the MS boat almost 100%
I'd still use Win98 for some Games, but Linux for the real work.
Now that we have DSL, I may try to DL a newer version of 'Drake, as I'm still on 7.0.
But it rocks, guys. Linux rocks. |
