Linux Logout....Halt? Running Mandrake 8.1 using KDE 2.2.1 When I get the Logout window, there are three options. Logout, Halt, and Reboot. What exactly does "Halt" do? I would guess it is something like standby, but don't know. And if I do pick "Halt", what happens and how do I get back to the UI? Germ |
Takes the OS down to the point where it's safe to turn the power off. |
If you are running a single processor ATX machine with a default install of Mandrake 8.x then the halt command will also shut off the machine after shutting down the OS. |
Cool, Thank you. Germ |
follow up to that.. running mandrake 8.1 how do I halt the system from command line. I've used "shutdown now" but it seems to still not be safe to turn off, since when I do, and reboot, it always says the drives were unmounted improperly and runs chkdsk on em. thx dragonb |
double post - opps. |
hello, re you using a custom kernel? If you have no idea of what I am talking about then you can safely say no. try shutdown -h now |
or simply poweroff |
If I'm in console mode only, nobody can shutdown except root right? I'm going to setup a server and dont want people shutting it down if they think I just left it running. |
my favorite: sync;halt |
