Windows Explorer refresh rate on Windows XP Pro

Is there any way to change the rate Windows XP queries network drives, or even disable the querying of network drives until a manual refresh instruction (such as pressing F5) is sent?

I have people here that have Windows Explorer open all day and Windows Explorer is flashing every time it re-paints the screen when searching for new or modified folder contents on the server volume.

This is especially annoying when drilling down through a long file path. Every time folder with a plus sign in front of it is expanded the screen flashes before showing the folders subfolders and files.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you turned off indexing in your services?
You can also try blowing away your "IconCache.db" in Documents and Settings\ (your profile) \Local Settings\Application Data folder. Reboot for rebuild of the iconcache database file.

Turn off auto-expanding trees in Windows Explorer

I'm sure some of you have noticed that in Windows Explorer, whenever you click a folder in the left pane, it automatically expands to show all subfolders. If you find this annoying, follow these steps...

1) close Windows Explorer if it's running
2) go Start -> Run, then type "regedit"
3) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced
4) Change the value of "FriendlyTree" to 0
5) close regedit, and start up Windows Explorer. Auto-expanding menus are now off

For some reason, microsoft left this option out of the Windows Explorer options.

Cheers!

I think this is what is happening. Unfortunately the workstations are locked down so we will have to wait for desktop services to get around to dealing with this.

Thanks for the tip. It's appreciated.

I see said the blind man....lol

I guess you will have to wait for the guy with the open sesa-me credentials then if you are locked out of system wide changes.

Cheers!

Microsoft did provide for this in Windows Explorer under Tools\Folder Options\View. Uncheck the box that says Display Simple Folder View.... Should take care of it.
