***XP common tips ..4 Newbies***

Browsed the forum for three days. Found gret solutions/tips/tricks..
For a newbie like me...The site has a lot to offer.

Just wandering if we can collect the tips and post under this thread..
What i have learned is ..

DISABLE STARTUP PROGRAMS..
*********************
Start/Run type; regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

and delete the reference.

If the culprit is not there, try the Startup folder.

Unless you're using w2k you can achieve the same results via Start/Run type; msconfig

Missing icons in control panel
*************************
Try rebuilding your icons with Tweak UI, and I believe there is also a control panel icon list in Tweak UI, perhaps you can re-check them to resolve the issue.

Removing deleted program from add/remove program
*****************************************
Addremove pro

instead of making seperate post like in the linux thread why not use one thread to post tips? I can understand you wanting to bump a thread but thats not what your trying to do.

BTW check your private messages

Windows Media Player doesn't open ASF files
**********************************
In the network settings for WMP9, try setting the proxy setting to autodetect. Also make sure all the protocols are checked.

-what are all these things running in taskmgr?
SvcHost.exe, This is a generic process, which acts as a host for other processes running from DLLs; therefore, don't be surprised to see more than one entry for this process. To see what processes are using Svchost.exe, use Tlist.exe from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM; the syntax is tlist -s at the command prompt. (http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q250/3/20.ASP )
LsSss.exe, This is the local security authentication server, and it generates the process responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service. This process is performed by using authentication packages such as the default Msgina.dll. If authentication is successful, Lsass generates the user's access token, which is used to launch the initial shell. Other processes that the user initiates inherit this token.
Services.exe, This is the Services Control Manager, which is responsible for starting, stopping, and interacting with system services.
Csrss.exe, This is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem (with Win32.sys being the kernel-mode portion). Csrss stands for client/server run-time subsystem and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. Csrss is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads, and some parts of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment.
Fast.exe, It Provides management for applications that require assistance in a multiple user environment.... or in english it's a little man in your computer that makes fast user switching work
ALG.exe, It provides support for 3rd party protocol plug-ins for Internet Connection Sharing and the Internet Connection Firewall.

Rightly or wrongly, some people have been ripping Ad-aware. While I do think it ought to be included, you may also include Spybot Search & Destroy which seems to nab items Ad-aware does not; and along that same avenue, there is SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. All of these are freeware with the invitation to donate in support of the author and the software upkeep. The later two act as barriers to the spyware ever getting onto your HDD. They do seem to work as following their installation, Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy have found far less spyware than prior to the Blaster and Guard install - and they are very light on system resource use. You might also want to include Kerio Firewarll and the free Anti-Virus offer of Grisofts AVG.

Edit x:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf, and remove all instances of the word 'hide'. You can then uninstall it through Add/Remove programs

Turn off CD Auto Play
- Open My Computer
- Right click on your CD ROM and choose Properties
- Click on the Auto Play tab
- In the drop down box you can choose the Action for each choice shown in the drop down box

Getting MP3 ripping to work in Windows Media Player 8 in XP
Enter the following in the registry :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMediaPlayerSet

tingsMP3Encoding]
"LowRate"=dword:0000dac0
"MediumRate"=dword:0000fa00
"MediumHighRate"=dword:0001f400
"HighRate"=dword:0002ee00

This corresponds to 56, 64, 128 and 192 Kbps.

You can change this to your liking using the following dword hex values :

320 Kbps = dword:0004e200
256 Kbps = dword:0003e800
224 Kbps = dword:00036b00
192 Kbps = dword:0002ee00
160 Kbps = dword:00027100
128 Kbps = dword:0001f400
112 Kbps = dword:0001b580
64 Kbps = dword:0000fa00
56 Kbps = dword:0000dac0

Increase BROADBAND:

this ones simple:
this is for broad band connections. I didn’t try it on dial up but might work for dial up.
1.make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
2. start> run>type gpedit.msc
3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
5. expand the "network branch"
6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0
reboot if you want to but not necessary on some systems your all done. Effect is immediate on some systems. some need re-boot. I have one machine that needs to reboot first, the others didn't. Don't know why this is.

This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self. Even with QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth.

PPPOE Support For XP
***************************
It's an easy fix Xp has support for PPPOE built in so you don't need your isp's software cause it's supported alreay... Find your way into network Connections (i.e. right click my network places>properties), click create new connection in the upper left then hit next.
choose connect to the internet>next
Setup my connection Manually>next
Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password>next
it will ask your ISP's name... the helpfile seems to indicate this is important.. leave it blank and it will try autodetecting it for you. alternatively one day you can probably call your ISP and get this info>hit next
fill in username/password>next
Connect using this connection like a normal dialup... er um something... can you tell I don't have to deal with PPPOE?

. Not sure of website address and want to try out all possible options ?
Most of the computer users would choose to type less if they are given such an option. Problem is for many of us, to find that option itself is challenging enough! Anyway I am talking to those folks who don't have habit of typing complete domain names and want the computer/Internet to do the job. Here are some of the registry changes that can widen your search domain.. If in Internet options, Display result and go to most likely site or just go to most likely site is enabled, you can type only the domain root in the Address box and Internet Explorer attempts to locate the correct Web site by searching different domain types. For example, if you type "Microsoft" in the Address box, Internet Explorer searches the domain types in the Autoscan list until a domain name match is found (in this case, www.microsoft.com).
By default, Internet Explorer searches the following domain types when the Autoscan Common Root Domains option is enabled:.
.com, .org, .net, .edu
To add a domain type to the Autoscan search list, add the string value "" with a value of "%s." and a string value "" with a value of "www.%s." (without quotation marks), where is the next available number and is the domain type, under the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/Url Template For example, if you want to add the .gov domain type and there are already 7 domain types listed, add a string value "8" with a value of "%s.gov" and a string value "9" with a value of www.%s.gov. NOTE: The order in which Internet Explorer searches domains is based on the string value. For example, the domain type associated with string value 1 is searched before the domain type associated with string value 2.
