Well, regardless of how ethical it is to charge a certain amount doesnt mean you should be mad about it. Alot of this seems to stem from jealousy... buts just imo.

Also... the computer industry is nothing compared to some of the others for prices. Lets take clothes for instance

I pay 50 dollars for a pair of abercrombie and fitch pants. Is it worth that? Obviously not. Does it require any special talent or debugging or design time to stitch up some clothes? No.

I feel like microsoft puts alot more work into their products than people give them credit for.

I'm also extremely pro business.. but I'm republican so go figure.

Does Microsoft have a monopoly? I dont really think so. Its just that there isnt all that adequate of competition. There's nothing stopping other Operation systems from coming out and doing the same thing MS does, they just havent had the time and the money to get proper advertising and 3rd party contracts.

Linux is a great competitor, but for the average computer illiterate consumer its not good for them is, however, windows is. Its simple to use

MS designs their products to be user friendly, therefore if more people can use it, more people will buy it, and as long as people continue to buy it they will charge waht they do.

Those pants are worth more then you think---try sittin down and make a pair from scratch---
Office suites are tools that allow the people that rely upon them to "do their job"---a carpenter is not making money if he doesnt buy a hammer and saw...

this is a fundamental difference between us vhockey.

Personally i'm a keynesian, so i believe in things such as imperfect information and such, so supply and demand are not completely accurate, there are problems that can slow them. This is a most perfect case, because microsoft doesn't have competition on the same level as them...it would be like myself starting a company on my own to compete with microsoft. there is no way a small company could compete. It's not that the product is better or worse...but simply that microsoft is very very large and has the money to advertise and run a campaign, and i don't. and without being able to do these things i will not be able to effectively compete against them...which means i will not be able to gain profits to effectively compete with them in the future...this is the problem with the current situation. There is no competition for microsoft, they hold over 90% of the market share. (http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,99643,00.asp)

Because of all of this it is impossible for a new product to gain recognition...and also with MS strategy there is a great deal of imperfect information (this fellow who bought office 2003 was misinformed...it wasn't truley a demand, but a percieved demand).

All the rants against MS and Bill Gates are just so much peeing into the wind. It's a free market, people. Supply and demand and all that. When people start demanding alternatives and open source programming, MS will lower prices to compete.

Um, isn't the point of convicting a company of being a monopoly to put down in the word of law that it is NOT a free-market economy and lay down government censure to help level the playing field for competitors to said monopoly?

It ain't no free market out there right now folks.

I've been using computers since 1976. Compared to what we had to go through then to get anything done, I think Microsoft has provided some great products. Sure, they're often buggy, but I'm hard put to find other companies' products which are also regularly bug-free.

Windows is a huge improvement over pointer-based text editors. Remember, there was a time when there was no such thing as a mouse, a window, a color monitor, a font (other than System), a graphic, a browser, an internet browser (or an internet, for that matter!), or any of the other great things we use our computers for these days. And Microsoft gave us or pioneered many of these products (not the internet ), like it or not.
