XP slow program loading.

When I first start the OS, some programs (not all) take forever to load, such as the "System" option in control panel, even small programs like my dial-up connection takes a long time to load. Although once the program(s) are loaded, it can be closed and reloaded instantly, but the initial load is annoying because it can be upwards of 20+ seconds. Anyone has a fix for this?

a good defrag is always a good start... also try unloading some programs and services from starting up at startup.

I had the exact same problem when I installed my Win XP on a KT7A motherboard running a 1.2GHZ T-bird. My solution was to reinstall the OS and disable the ACPI feature from installing during setup.

In other MS OS's you had to run setup with a command switch to disable ACPI. In Win XP you have to press F6 when you get the "to load SCSI devices press F7" at the beginning of Win XP setup (yes press F6, not F7). You won't get a message or any other kind of indicator when you press F6, but that is Microsoft's fix from their Knowledge base.

Prior to this my IRQ's were not being assigned correctly. In one instance I had my sound card, modem, video card, and one other device all sharing the same IRQ

It worked for me anyhow, hope it works for you

The spec is Athlon xp 1600+, 128 meg. Although the drive I installed the XP on is pretty small, only has about 600 megs left. Dual-boot with win 98. Is reinstalling the OS the only option? I've done enough of OS installation last week
