You could try seeing what you can do from VBA. Its been a while but I think you can do far more from VBA than through the Customize dialog.
commandbars("Menu Bar").Enabled = False

Yep, managed to get this screenshot to show what it looks like - the menu bar doesn't appear in the right-click menu or in the Customize dialog.
Wonder how it happened - doubt the customer would/could have done it themselves. Maybe it was done by a word virus, or even as a prank - sounds like a pretty cool trick to play on someone, must remember it for future use <evil grin>

what version of VB are you using - I have VBpro 4.0 sitting here?
thanks - and yest that is what is going on -
this guy put all the stuff on his desktop that he uses instead of using toolbars - I also found a template for his toolbar on the desk top - but it is locked up solid - I may have to delete it in dos and go back -
format and reinstall are looking like the way to go right now

That isn't VB, it's VBA. Y'know, Tools->Macro->Visual Basic Editor. Or, in this case (huh huh), Alt-F11.

I had the same problem with a machine in our school's open lab. WIN 98 at the time. After 15 minutes I couldn't fix it so I just reformatted and loaded a new drive image from the server.
Your problem isn't unheard of but I'm sure not a help on how to solve it!

Yep, I bet some student did the VBA thing as a trick. Actually just looked over the topic in help and there is an incredible amount of stuff you can do - basically you can turn Word into a totally different application, you can customize almost everything, menu bars, toolbars, even context menus!

thanks - never used VBA
usually I work with the guts - rather than apps and fixing them
I certainly appreciate your comments!
edit - opened it - thanks - I 'll post back how it turns out
I am trying not to dogpile the machine - reforamt is the last thing I want to do as this guy may just restore the problem after I give it back to him - and I am looking for the explanation rather than just dump it and install again
