Question PARTITION SIZE LIMIT FOR 98-XP DUAL?

When I tried to partition my 30 Gb. HD. to dualboot Win98 +Winxp I was limited to 2047 Mb. for my primary partition if I wanted to install another OS.I sort of need this dualboot because xp doesn't support my scanner at all (acer620p), or my printer(epson 600 color stylus) completely, printer works w/xp drivers but not all functions. Is there aworkaround for this 2GB. limit?

2047 Mb is the FAT16 logical drive limit....what are you using to partition with? If it is an older Win95 or DOS floppy that may be the problem.

    limit for 98-xp

I'm using a win98 bootdisk,I used fdisk to delete all partitions and couldn't create a primary partition larger than 2047 mb. if I wanted to install another os.

Partition magic sounds great, but I don't have $69.00 for it. Are there any free utilities that could do the job?

It could be a BIOS limitation. When was your system made? If it's before 96, it could be the problem.

make sure you have the latest bios revision for your bios from your mobo manufacturer so you have all the feature support you need too...

and i think there are a few pm clones out there, i'll let someone else fill you in on those though....

Those free downloads of PartitionMagic are just for demonstration. You can go thru the whole routine of creating, resizing or deleting a partition, but, when you click the "Apply" button you get a message telling you to buy the real version.

I typed n .And I see my mistake, I won't bee able to access this drive with other operating systems that aren't fat32, but win98 is fat32, and win xp installs with fat 32. If I decide to convert xp ntfs will I still be able to dualboot?

Windows98 cannot access an NTFS partition. It would be best to leave things as Fat32 if you prefer both OS to have access the same partition.

You could always convert to NTFS later (without data loss) if you find yourself not using Windows98. (Win2k has a convert function)
