Reg Edit oops!
I was building a computer and went into reg edit on Windows 2k to get rid of some of the startup programs.
Unfortunately I think I got rid of something that I shouldn't have. The computer boots up fine but the desktop does not come up for a few minutes. I get the start tray and the system tray and I can even run the programs off of the start tray. It's just that the desktop will be blank, no shortcuts or my computer, or even wallpaper.
After a few minutes the desktop will finally show itself with everything on it.
Could I have deleted something in the registry that the os is looking for before it puts up the desktop?
Currently, the run folder has these three programs in it.
Located under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/RUN
(Default)
EM_EXEC (logitech mouse app)
Mobsync (I know I don't need this but I have it running anyways)
So what's missing and how do I put it back?
Thanks

Rather than worry about what's missing and reload manually, I suggest that you just just reload an old registry backup. You'll be in no time.

I have:
Default
loadqm.exe
RUNDLL32.EXE NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize
mobsync.exe /logon

Since I just built the computer and didn't make a registry back up, will it still work?
What are the steps that I take to get back to the original settings?
I tried to change it back to the last known good configuration by hitting f8 at boot up. This didn't work. If I continue to do that does it keep taking a step back or does it only go back one step and stay that way?Last edited by Grendel; January 6th, 2002 at 04:39 PM.

eweruk: I love the avatar ROLF

Any way. It's always good to make a backup of the registry. But since you haven't you might try eweruk showed. It can't hurt!
I've never done it manually, but to make a registry backup I believe you just go into regedit. The click file/export. Chose where to save it and make sure the export range is set to all. Then whenever you need to reset it inport that reg.

Where can I import
loadqm.exe and
RUNDLL32.EXE NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize
Since I'm using Win 2k does it use RUNDLL?
What is loadqm?

Almost sounds like your Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service isn't starting. I assume you can check if this service is running in W2K (Control Panel/ Services in NT4).

Is there not a rollback option in win2k to revert the machine, or at least the registry, to initial install state?

I think ME was the first one to do that without the aid of 3rd party progs. XP perfected it, and I don't think 2k had it at all. Maybe I'm wrong though.
You can get such utils though. Ones for your registry are easy to find.
The import command is under File. Or you can just double click on the backup to restore it (You don't even have to start regedit then).

Nope, no rollback feature in Win2k. Worst case, pop in the CD, and repair the install. Whatever you did should be fixed by that. Just back up the registry next time, and you'll be fine.

Unfortunately I won't be able to play around with that system for a couple of weeks since I'm back home now. But I'll try just putting the windows CD back in.
I'll let you guys know how it works then.
Thanks for the input.
