| Win XP Pro Upgrade and clean Install?
Can I do a clean install using Windows XP Pro Upgrade without installing Win 2000 first? In previous versions of Windows (9x) this was possible but you just had to provide proof with a copy of the previous OS usually on CD.
Thanks

yes. as far as i know, xp just checks to see if there is proof of previous ownership. so if you have a 2000 cd, you should be able to.
besides, sicne xp can't go on an upgrade from 2k, you need to clean install anyway, which is more reason why it should work. |

XP Pro can and does go on an upgrade from 2000.
When I try it from a fresh install it writes the install files to the C:\ drive and then errors out at the point of partitioning because the install files are located there........ even if I specify another drive in advanced install I still get the error message.... |

well i don't have xp, so i can't help ya there.
frankly i think win2k has the easiest install of all the windows flavors (and i've installed them all, except me)... it just worked, and worked well and in the end i had a wonderful 2k desktop that works like a charm. |

Yeah you can. WinXP just looks for proof of ownership of a previous Microsoft OS and then allows you to do a clean install. |

That's the way it worked going from Win 95 to the Win 98 upgrade, and from Win 98 to the XP upgrade for me. Just keep your previous OS disk on hand, and it'll prompt you when it needs it. Quote: |
then errors out at the point of partitioning because the install files are located there
| You lost me on that part...All I do is set my CDROM as the first boot device, put the XP disk in, and let it go. It should give you the option to format your HDD. Then I put in the 98 disk when it prompts me to, then continue installation.
Forgive me if I've missed something! |

Do you already have an OS on the drive you are trying to load it on?
You may have to partition the drive and format it first using the XP CD!

My Win XP Pro Uprade CD wont boot. I ran it from a Win 98 Disk and also from Win 2000. When I get to the point to where it asks me if I want to upgrade or replace OS, I choose replace. It then reboots, lets me choose partion. I try to delete the partition and says it cant cause the install files are located there.....
I did this last night so I am going from memory. sorry if I confuse anyone.....
Thanks

if you do it from within 98, all you need to do is tell it to convert it to ntfs and it will do a clean install... the best option for stabilty anyway. |

Yes, it has Win XP upgraded from win 2000. I am wanting to do a clean install without the 2000. It is already NTFS and its a single partion. |
