Hello all,
Well i finally got my new computer, and boy is it great....when it doesn't crash. I have windows xp home, and i get problems with the graphics card (Hercules 3d Prophet III 64mb). The crashes always restart the entire computer, rarely end up on desktop. I know i have a hardware confilct somewhere, just cant pinpoint it. I currently have verson 23.11 for geforce 3 drivers installed (as i cannot find any other version supported for WindowsXP). I have adjusted hardware acceleration, tried downloading drivers from different sources, completely reinstalling original drivers from the supplied disk with the card, ive tried many things, but obviously, im not gettin it. This is my first custom ordered computer, and i love it, (damn fast!), i just need to get it stabilized.
My computer specs:
AMD Athlon XP 1900, Heat Sink and Fan
Socket A Asus A7V266-E KT266A, 5 PCI, 6 USB, UDMA/100, 4X AGP, 3 DIMM, Sound
1,536 Mb PC-2100 266MHz DDR SDRAM **Note - 3 DIMM Motherboards Only**
100. GB UDMA/100 7200RPM Western Digital 8Mb Cache
56X CD-ROM
Hercules 3D Prophet III 64Mb GeForce3 AGP DVI/TV out
Hercules Maxi Sound Game Theatre XP
Dual Speakers with Volume Control
56k V.90 Data/Fax/Voice Modem
3Com 3C905B-TX 10/100 PCI Network Card
Windows XP Home w/CD
Norton AntiVirus 2002 (OEM)
Mid Tower NexGen ATX Case 300w Power Supply, One Case Fan
17in. KDS VS-7P .24mm 1280x1024 Monitor
Microsoft Internet Keyboard
Microsoft Intellimouse Optical
3.5in. Floppy Disk Drive
The operating system crashes when i'm web surfing, listening to a cd, or even just doing nothing except reading window file properties (windows explorer) and nothing else running. Any help or ideas wanted or welcome. Thanx

Hi ..
23.11 Drivers are buggy in WinXP cmbined with VIA chipset (which is your case) ... the only thing i suggest is you grab the drivers version 21.83 which is stable and works fine .. i have the 21.83 drivers on my PC (which is somehow similar to yours ) and they work solid ..
Regards
<EDIT> ..Here is a link where you can grab them ... http://www.reactorcritical.com/download.shtml#1000
Good luck

its probably a software problem... i had the same thing happen to me several weeks ago...if that automatic restart thing is pissing you off u can turn it off by right clicking on my computer...ahh crap, just realized im in windows ME at the moment... i havent memorized how to turn the automatic restart thing off.... anywho u can't do anything about it... you're probably getting stop errors which means you HAVE to restart...
Its either a program or some driver thats causing windows XP to crash.... PC ALERT III was the program that was causing my comp to crash... i uninstalled it and i haven't had a single stop error since....
has this always been happening?
try to remember what program u installed last... its probably not win XP compatible.... |

Thanx for the link KenKun, but every single link on that page <Page cannot be displayed>.....they are all dead links to my ie. As i said before, i cannot find other versions of the drivers for gf3. That page has a load of them, but none are useable as the links are all dead. Thanks for the advice tho, i will go back thru my add/remove programs list lookin at dates and start there with uninstalling. Will let ya know, .... If anyone else knows of sites with different WindowsXP driver versions for geforce3, please post.
Thanx,

Good sites!
I have currently installed the 21.83 version, much improved displays i must say, now i am only crashing back to the desktop, but still crashing tho. Now i rarely get the BSOD along with the restart. Still crashing to desktop out of games tho. Think i'll try the 16.xx version next. Thanx again for the links!

Is the PSU that you have in there, a high quality product ?..
300 Watt for the big party (parts) you have there seems OK .. but when using the CPU at full speed with all Memory and HDD (huge one dude ) .. it may cause shortage in providing the proper juice to all the parts, so it crash itself ..
Only an idea, (mostly wrong though ) .. but if by any chance you can try another (lets say) 350 or 400Watts PSU .. then do it .. coz it might be your problem ...
Also make sure you are providing proper cooling for the case in general and for the CPU specially ...
Regards
<EDIT> Who is your RAM maker?

If it is crashing even while surfing the net, it could definitely be heat related (as KenKun said!!).
You could also try to download the latest 4 in 1 Via drivers pack! It could help.!!
